This is the second in the series covering Texas history. In the story, Ned Fulton, our hero, rides to the aid of the Texans defending the Alamo after seeing the approaching Mexican army. He along with the others are determined to defend it to the death. Because he is young, Bowie and Crockett trick him to leave the Alamo on the night before the Mexican's attack. He watches the fall of the Alamo as a prisoner of Santa Anna and then escapes in the ensuing chaos. He rides to join other Texan soldiers. In the process he observes the fall of other cities and is captured again by the Mexican army. He is a prisoner of war at the massacre of Goliad and is among the 26 who escape. He reunites with his friends outside the city and they head to the coast barely managing to alert a ship with ammunition for the Texans of an ambush. The book is written for teens ages 10-15 but I found it enjoyable. I like a more mild description of horrible events and this was very mild yet exciting.

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical fiction novel. I'm not sure off the top of my head about how accurate some of the historical details were. The author created a fictional character and set him in the historical setting in order to tell the story from his perspective, which is common in the genre. Overall it's a good story. If you like historical fiction and frontier type action and settings, I'm sure you will enjoy this book. I found out after I read it that it is the second book in a series. But I also found out the author wrote them to stand alone so you don't have to read them in order.
