The Thirteen Days of Yule Reviews
This short book opens with an interesting (although sadly citation-free) passage on carol history by Anthony Murray: Carols date back to the fifteenth century. And although today we associate them exclusively with Christmas, it was not always thus. Any festive occasion called for caroling. But a carol was not always sung. It could be a game or a dance.Murray also states that the the gifts in this version are "far more exotic" than in the better-known 12 Days of Christmas, but I think he has been lulled by familiarity in that count: the only really unusual animal here is the Arabian Baboon (what a terrible present, really), otherwise it is mostly birds and dogs.Perhaps because I haven't heard the song aloud, the text was not very interesting Likewise, I found the illustrations on the boring side, although I do like the way he draws birds.
