Angela Ellis is in junior college when her mother dies. Her dad has Alzheimer's and is in care, so her mother’s death has left her flat broke and completely unmoored. When she starts hearing her mother’s voice at night, she is more than a little spooked. The fact that her two college friends staying with her couldn’t hear her mother’s voice just makes it worse. Wondering if she is losing her mind, Angela finds an old school friend who is now running a ghost hunting business. During their investigations, the mystery of her family becomes more apparent. A thousand miles away, Casey Jones is hiding from life on a small island. Now 37, Casey has a checkered history and avoids all but the shallowest of contact with other people. The only exception is her great aunt Rosetta, who rescued Casey from a desperate life in New York a decade ago. Now running the café on the island for her aunt, Casey receives a letter from her estranged mother, which was posted after her death. Casey is trying to work out how to grieve someone who abandoned her when she needed her most, and Angela is trying to understand the mystery of her mother’s dead and the spirits that are keeping her awake at night. Neither of them realize that the future for them both will tie them together. This is a drama about families at its heart. Angela and Casey are equally lost in their own worlds, and yet there is a connection neither of them know. Both are well written characters, with their own issues of grief and own problems coming to terms with their lives. I really liked both Angela and Casey as characters. It is too easy to make someone who is 20 years old (Angela), appear to be too old or too brash, or even too naïve to work. Mulligan has struck a good balance and made Angela interesting, but not given her a wisdom and experience beyond her years and her situation. Casey is a more complex and more damaged character, and is therefore more of a mystery. This too is well handled by Mulligan. There is an element of the ghost story to this, but it doesn’t play a large role in the proceedings. It did make sense for the characters involved, without being too over the top. It isn’t a ghost story per se, so don’t think this is a supernatural thriller or fantasy book. It isn’t. Human drama is the strongest element of this book, and it works well because Mulligan has such good control of the plot and pacing, and has written interesting and believable characters. This was a genuinely enjoyable book.Advanced reading copy provided by NetGalley for an honest review.

This is a nice paranormal ghost story that is narrated by two women in different parts of the country. You wonder what these two, Angela and Casey could possibly have in common. Angela is in college when her mother dies. She goes home and is haunted by her mom's ghost. She consults a local paranormal group for help and encounters an old classmate who truly believes her. Casey runs a diner on a small island in Maine and is not happy to find a developer wants to build a resort. Finally the connection is revealed and the two women must reconcile a past so they can enjoy their future. I enjoyed this story very much. The characters are very real and think and act like normal people when confronted by things they can't explain. This is the first book by Diane Mulligan I've read but it's likely I'll be on the lookout for her 4 previous books.

During her junior year in college, Angela Ellis’s mother dies, and she returns to her childhood home in South Carolina to settle the estate. In her old home, she encounters her mother’s ghost, and strange messages that unsettle her. Enlisting the assistance of a ghost hunter, she tries to decipher the messages. What she learns is disturbing; was Deb, really her mother, or was her entire life a lie?In the meantime, on Devil’s Back Island in Maine, Casey, living with her aunt, is also troubled. Hesitant to make human connections, she lives a life adrift. As Angela learns more about her background, the lives of the two women slowly intersect until they both discover what they lost two decades earlier. What She Inherits by Diane v. Mulligan is an intriguing story that is part paranormal, part coming-of-age, and part epic fiction about human relationships, and the enduring impact they have on people’s lives. The author switches between Angela and Casey in a story that builds the suspense chapter-by-chapter until it reaches a satisfying conclusion. You’ll become so invested in the two women’s quest for closure, you’ll find the supernatural elements taking a distant background role in the story.I found this to be a thoroughly entertaining read. I received a free copy of this book.

What would you do if everything you grew up knowing, and believe made you the way you were, turned out to be a lie? This book answers that question with one way of how it could happen. This story follows two people, Angela Ellis, a young college student whose mother died unexpectedly and Casey Seaver, a thirtysomething lady who runs a café on a small island which provides the necessary landscape for her to hide from her past and make her own way. Angela is faced with some rather unusual circumstances which makes her believe she is being haunted by her mother's ghost. Casey is faced with the potential need to sell her café and leave her island she loves so much.I truly enjoyed this novel. This is technically my first Paranormal Fiction I have read that features ghosts and I loved it. The story offered a wide variety throughout: love, friendship, lost-love, family, new-love, and the list goes on and on, PLUS ghosts, but not the spooky, freaky kind (which are not bad) but enough that they figure to strongly in the storyline. The novel had a few typos and missed words here and there and it was easy to figure out the end result as the story builds out, but that is not always a bad thing.

What She Inherits: Diane V. MulliganIn this book the listener gets women's fiction, mystery, romance, suspense, and paranormal all mixed together. Two separate stories with their own characters that seem to have nothing to do with each other eventually come together and make an interesting listen. The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Becket Royce brings the story to life."I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator."

This book was a little slow to start for my liking, which caused me to struggle to get a good feel for the characters. It started out with Angela dealing with the loss of her mother. Then switched over to Casey who lives on an island and works in a bakery. These two stories are separate but slowly through the book come together to form one story. The back and forth of the characters and stories made it difficult for me to keep up.I am sure that readers will enjoy this book, just muscle through the first 100 pages or so before it picks up speed.

Overall Rating - 4.5 Stars. What She Inherits by Diane Mulligan is an enjoyable contemporary romance with a few paranormal elements interwoven into the story. Considering how many Ghost Hunter-type shows are on the television these days, I thought the premise of the story quite clever. The story centers around Angela Ellis who suddenly withdraws from college after her mother's untimely death. With her father in an assisted living facility suffering from Alzheimer’s, Angela feels quite alone especially after she starts hearing strange voices in her family home in South Carolina. While visiting her father one day, Angela discovers that her parents held deep secrets and previous lives that she never knew about. There is also secondary story that alternates with Angela’s story. This one revolves around Casey Seaver who runs a café and bakery in Maine's Casco Bay. It is obvious that Casey was a troubled youth and someone who has been running away from something for the past 20 years. When a developer comes to town with big ideas on how to make the sleepy little island a destination resort, Casey is suddenly awakened from her 20-year slumber. While the alternating stories seemed to jump around and interrupted the flow of the overall story, I really enjoyed how the two plot lines intertwined at the end. I also appreciated how Angela sought help from a local ghost hunter, who just happened to be someone who admired her from afar in middle school -- that plot line was very sweet and satisfying.I listened to the Audible version of this story, which was narrated by Becket Royce. She did an outstanding job. Her style is very natural and conversational, and she uses differing voices for each of the characters. Becket had great intonation and pace, and kept the story suspenseful throughout. I received a free copy of this audio and freely leave this unbiased review. In summary, I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance, with a hint of the supernatural.

Five Stars!I don't normally give five stars. But this book deserves it. It's a well written book that once I started reading it, I didn't want to put it down. I only wish it hadn't ended. Hopefully there will be a sequel. I'll pay good money to find out what happens to the characters.

Two simultaneous stories eventually come together, becoming intertwined by a series of shocking twists and turns. Sometimes ghosts aren't the only things that haunt us. What She Inherits was a great listen and very entertaining. I would recommend this audiobook.I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator. This review is my honest opinion.

What She Inherits by Diane C. Mulligan was a great book. Angela is at college when she finds out that her mother died. Her mother's death only left more questions for Angela. Casey has made a decent life for herself when she receives a posthumous letter from her estranged mother about what caused her feath. I enjoyed reading how Angela and Casey's lives cross. This is a must read.

In What She Inherits, Diane Mulligan does a superb job weaving together two disparate stories in two different states, each with their own cast of characters, before she brings it all together in a seamless and satisfying fashion. This is Ms. Mulligan's third novel and it is, in my opinion, her best one yet. The main characters are nuanced and well-drawn, while the supporting characters have depth and realism. This is what I like about Ms. Mulligan's previous fiction: you can recognize her characters because they seem like real people you might meet. And yet there is something about this story which drives it even beyond her previous 2 novels. There is a ghost story aspect, but even if you're not one for the paranormal, this remains a very enjoyable book. I found myself eagerly looking forward to my reading time because I became invested in the lives of the characters and I rooted for them in their struggles. We all inherit so much--both good and bad--from our families and the book does not shy away from meditating on the complexity of that inheritance. As you turn the pages, you can see a maturing author hitting her stride with this very entertaining and well-written novel. I would highly recommend it.

What She Inherits by Diane V. Mulligan. I give this book 5 stars. This is my first book by this author and I'm glad I stumbled across it. What a wonderful story. The characters felt so real. It had a mix of romance, suspense, some ghosts (literally) and some dark secrets. I love how the 2 separate stories intertwined. It kept me guessing for so long. I recommend this book to everyone.
