I loved this book! Adam loved Olivia, but her love belonged to someone else. This is is Adam's and Cass' love story. It was emotionally charged and that is never a bad thing in my eyes. It gives you all the feels without being too much or not enough. E.J. Shortall is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Don't miss out on this great book!

This is another standalone in a series. The characters from book one are in this book as well, and you kinda should read the first book to understand Adam and Cassie.Adam has had his eye on one woman for almost his whole life, an while she didn't know it he loved her from a far. He figured if he had her in his life as a friend that would eventually lead to more. But that's not how life works. His best friend and love, Liv, finds her true love and ends up engaged. Adam still has feelings for her and try's to get her out of his system by sleeping with women. What he didn't intend to happen was Cassie. She was there for him and never asked for more at the time. But now things are changing. With Liv's wedding coming that meant Adam and Cass would be around each other again. Could they put what happened between them in the past and regain their friendship? Or could there be more?Cass is feisty, bossy and independent. She is known by the men for her no nonsense attitude. So when she starts dating Jay something states to go wrong. Her personality seems to change, her feistiness is gone and she is lost. Friends start to notice and Adam is there to help her.Can Adam prove to Cass that she is worth more than what Jay is offering? Can Cass trust Adam not to hurt her again?I loved this book it was a really easy book to read. It flowed really well. It does have spots that seemed to drag but besides that is was great.

Oy this book!! It was definitely right when it said there might be some triggers; but they just make the whole story better. You don't have to read this after Prepared to Fight but you should as that's where we first meet Adam and Cassie. Adam's life is less than ideal so he has a drunken one night stand with a friend. Trying to forget that girl he loves, Liv, is married to someone else. Meanwhile, Cassie is training to become a kickboxing phenom, trained by her boyfriend Jay. Who over time, Cassie finally notices that Jay has been cutting her off from other people, taking over her life - a domestic abuser in the making eh? Cassie and Adam's friendship gets deeper as they try to fight their feelings while Cassie is preparing to fight to break free of Jay.

**I would recommend reading Prepared to Fight first **Adam has always loved Liv and thought that one day she would see him the way he sees her, but the heart wants what the heart wants but being the best of friends is better than nothing but Adam wasn't prepared for Cassie, she came in at the right time with no questions asked , but when things in Cassie life starts to go sour, Adam returns the favor , but can Cassie trust him? I loved it.

5 Stars!!! I was given this book in turn for an honest review. Adam and Cassie are both lost, lonely and seeking happiness. They found a friendship that bound them together. Will their friendship stay platonic or will their attraction become too hard to resist? I was so excited when E.J. Shortall said she would be writing Adam and Cassie’s story; after reading Prepared to Fight book #1 I felt they had a story all of their own to tell and WOW, what a story it is. It is much deeper and emotional than I expected it to be for both Adam and Cassie, they both had troubles and issues to work through, ones I didn’t even imagine. E.J. Shortall has delivered another brilliant romance with passionate and emotionally filled scenes. I will be honest about Adam; after reading the first book in the series he wasn’t my most favourite person, however after reading his and Cassie’s story I fell for him and I fell for him HARD! He was a troubled young man, with a whole load of love to give. He was simply lost and seeking guidance, acceptance and love. He was also strong, caring, and wouldn’t ever harm those he cared for. Cassie also grew on me with this book; I had been unsure of her in the first book. She was strong, independent, caring and loyal. She was also lost and lacking love and support from those, she needed it most from. Without realising Cassie was able to open Adam’s eyes and see that what he had believed to be true for years wasn’t as deep or as powerful as he had first felt. That there was a life out there waiting for him and he had feelings he hadn’t even recognised. Adam could see that Cassie was slowly losing her true spirit and fight; that she deserved much better than Jay was showing her. Jay was a manipulative and controlling creep with an ulterior motive to his actions; he was dangerous both mentally and physically. I would have happily crawled into my kindle and given Jay one hell of an ass kicking! This story ended with a bang that I never saw coming. E.J. Shortall gave no clues to the explosive ending, she had me sat on the edge of my seat waiting with abated breath hoping that Cassie and Adam would find the love and happiness they both had longed for and deserved and she did not disappoint! If you love contemporary romances with real life circumstances that are dealt with in a delicate and truthful way, Prepared to Fall by E.J. Shortall is for you!

Adam Ashworth and Cassie Burton are two characters we meet in book one of the Golden Oaks series. These two had a connection, but with Adam in love with his best friend their relationship didn’t have a chance. Adam continues working at a job, for his father, that he is not happy with, thanks to promises made when he was young and continues to carry his secret crush for the one that doesn’t belong to him.Cassie is finally getting the chance at her dream of entering the world of kickboxing competition. With her boyfriend Jay, who just so happens to also be her coach, she can see this finally happening regardless of what her mother thinks of how she is living her life. Jay has been there when things with her family went downhill and destroyed her so when things started to change with Jay she wouldn’t face the truth. When Adam starts to see these changes, he realizes that his feeling are more than he originally thought, but what he really needs to do is protect her and get her to see the truth. Falling in love is not a part of the plan. This book took me on several unexpected twists and then when I thought I knew what was going to happen, the story went differently than predicted. I love that element of the suspense in the story and not being able to guess what is going to happen. It kept me wanting to read more even when I was unable to. Sure this is a book that can be read as a stand alone, but I would recommend reading Prepared to Fight first to get more of the background with the characters. The author does a great job of covering the interactions from the first book, but by reading the other book it will add to the depth of this story. This book was even better because it was great catching up with Liv and Nate as well as Wes, who I hope will have his own story. It really was great getting to know and understand Adam and Cassie. This is an emotional book and some of the subject matter can cause triggers for some, but the author does an excellent job in showing how even the strong fall. The story is not rushed and is very realistic. You feel the emotions of the characters and will be having conversations with them on their actions. I found myself trying to yell at them both like they needed my "arm-chair-coaching. " I am looking forward to reading more from this author who I hope, besides Wes, will give Caleb a book as well.

Well once again EJ Shortall has delivered an amazing piece of work. I personally fell in love the Golden Oakes boys in Prepared to Fight. This is where we met Adam and Cassie for the first time. They hit it off but all did not go well for this pair. Prepared to Fall is Adam and Cassie’s story. But as we learnt in Prepared to Fight, Adam has lingering feelings for Liv, can he get over his feelings for Olivia enough to move on now she is married to Nathan? Prepared to Fall is full of twists and turns on both Adam and Cassie’s parts. But can their paths finally align for these two, giving them their happy ever after?Adam lives his life to a promise he made as a child to his grandfather, to remain in the family business. This is not what Adam wants for his life though. As a child it seemed like an easy request, now as an adult he is torn between family loyalties and following his own dreams, so far family has won. Unfortunately this does not make for a happy life. Cassie, strong willed an excellent fighter never notices her boyfriend, Jay, taking over her life and her personality. She becomes tied in a relationship where she thinks she wants to be, but doubts creep in leaving her to re-evaluate her relationship. Can Cassie make the break from Jay which she really needs, or will he keep her just where he wants her? I am glad to see the passion between Adam and Cassie never died, they are definitely a good match. Even though she is still seeing Jay, Adam is always there for her as a close friend. He is her shoulder to cry on, but they both know Adam is hung up on Liv, leaving no space for him to be open to a different relationship. A really great story once again by EJ Shortall, I really cannot wait to see what comes next from my Golden Oakes boys.

I've had the opportunity in the past to review E.J. Shortall's novels but never had the time. I will say without a doubt, I am happy I finally made time.Prepared to Fall is a fast paced read full of well developed characters. I wouldn't say that reading Prepared to Fight, Book 1 is a requirement but I have to assume it would help further support the already strong relationships between Liv, Nate, Cassie, Adam and Wes.Cassie is an up and comer in the kickboxing world. Paired with boyfriend Jay as her trainer, she feels she's headed in the direction of a title fight. But boyfriend Jay has a few, let's say, control issues. Jealousy is not a good color on this guy. The trigger warning in the blurb is no joke and fuels your hatred toward this out of control relationship. Most of the time I just wanted to smack Cassie in the head and found myself more than once screaming at my Kindle, pleading with her to find a clue.Adam is an Architect, working with his Father's firm. He's in a job he doesn't love, fueled by a promise he made to his Grandfather when he was young, he sticks it out when he'd rather be doing anything but working with and for his Father. Having missed what he figures was his only chance at love by allowing his best friend to marry another man, he now figures it will never happen again.I adored this story, sure there were things about it I didn't love and the volatile relationship that Cassie found herself in was one of them but on the whole this was a beautifully written love story about personal growth, empowerment and staying strong as individuals, friends and as a couple.Magical Read E.J. Thank you for sharing your story with me!

I always find it odd reviewing my own book. I mean, I wrote the thing, of course, I'm going to love it and shout 5* from the rooftops. The thing with Prepared To Fall, though, is that I genuinely am so in love with this story. In book one, Prepared To Fight, we had a brief introduction to Cassie and Adam. We loved Cassie's feisty, ballsy attitude and her relationship with the Oakes brothers. We saw a side of Adam that was maybe a bit controlling but also sweet. It took me a while to fully appreciate the dynamic between these two characters and understand what made them tick. But when they finally started talking to me, oh boy, I fell in love.Things aren't always as they seem.I'm not going to offer spoilers; if you want the teasers, I suggest you check my blog or social media pages. What I will say, though, is that this is real, it is gritty, it angsty, what Cassie goes through so many women around the world go through. Believe me, the research alone was enough to break my heart. These characters took me on an emotional journey that left me drained yet euphoric, broken yet ecstatic.Cassie and Adam's story isn't your typical boy meets girl romance. This story will have you yelling, cursing and wanting to throw your books and e-readers out the window. It will also have you swooning, awwing and trusting that things will always get better.Grab your Golden Oakes membership card and come meet the men and women of Golden Oakes. They are waiting with open arms.

It’s a while since I’ve read the first book in the Golden Oakes series, so I can honestly say that if you haven’t read the first book you’ll have no problem reading the second book in this series. As with most books in a series, major characters become minor ones and vice versa, plus you’re introduced to new characters.I loved this book! I only vaguely remembered Cassie from Prepared to Fight, but she is the “star” of this book and she really pulled on my heartstrings. Cassie is one of the characters that, if you could, you would take her aside and have a good talk with her. She was a ‘real’ person.Adam really stepped up to the plate in this book. I’ll admit that I didn’t take to him in the Prepared to Fight, but I fell in love with him in Prepared to Fall. I loved both of these characters and I really wanted them to have a HEA, preferably together. But it’s not all hearts and flowers in Prepared to Fall. There are characters that you will hate and maybe even wish bad things to happen to them. Okay, I did want bad things to happen to them. Although, I didn’t experience “triggers” because of my own life experiences, I had moments when I got a bit emotional, even angry.Prepared to Fall is one of those books which is hard to put down. But do yourself a favour, and read the first book in the Golden Oakes series, Prepared to Fight and find out how these characters’ stories started.I gave Prepared to Fall 5 stars.

Reviewed for A Wanton Book Lover BlogAdam has been in love with his best-friend Olivia for years. Every seemed to know it but her. Olivia has found and married her own love (read about Olivia and Nathan in Prepared to Fight which is the first stand-alone in the series, but it's really good too, so you should read it). Adam and Cassie hooked-up at Olivia's and Nate's wedding but things have kind-of been weird since returning. Cassie is now dating Jay, her trainer. Things are going well until Jay starts to get possessive and aggressive towards her. Cassie has been able to hind Jay's behavior and physical abuse until finally one night, her friends find out. Adam feels it's his responsibility to look after Cassie and take care of her. Soon Adam and Cassie find themselves growing closer until they develop relationship. Can Cassie finally escape Jay and can Adam protect her? I loved Prepared to Fight. It can read be read as a stand-alone but I recommend reading the first book, Prepared to Fall. In Prepared to Fall, you get to meet Adam and Cassie a little. Anyway, Prepared to Fight was excellent. I feel in love with Adam immediately. He was a secret alpha; when pushed, he dominant, protective side really came out and he would do anything to protect Cassie. Overall, Prepared to Eight was an awesome, well-written contemporary romance story. It was a definite 5 star read for.

I was very excited to see that we would be getting another instalment from the Golden Oaks gang. Although it is handy to have read the first book (Prepared to Fight) this can be read as a complete standalone. This time around we look at Cassie and Adam, after their one night stand, the two of them have been avoiding each other. Cassie has moved onto a new relationship and is preparing for her next fight and Adam has thrown himself into work and trying to adjust to his best friend Olivia getting married. Hiding his true feelings for Olivia is hard enough but then having to come face to face with Cassie at the wedding throws in confusing feelings to the mix. Luckily Adam and Cassie resume their friendship, but Cassie's boyfriend/coach is none to pleased. What follows is a heartbreaking story of an abusive relationship, can Cassie be saved before its too late? This story shows the effects that an abusive relationship can have on a woman, even a confident and independent woman like Cassie. Its difficult to read about how her boyfriend manipulates and plays with her mind. I hated him, to the point that I messaged the author to tell her so. Another great story from the author and i can not wait for the next instalment!

Adam, messed up. He is stuck in job he hates, but does it out of obligation to his grand dad. He crossed the line with a dear friend leaving her in Paris. Alone. In Bed. Right After said line was crossed. Now he has to face her, at the wedding of the woman he has loved his whole life. Yeah, Adam is messed up.Cassie, has moved on from the night with her best friends, besite Adam. She is now in a committed yet controlling relationship. She is however, dreading coming face to face with the man that broke her heart, Adam. You know how it is, you always see what you have when you don't have it anymore and this is exactly that. Only now Adams see more that what Cassie is letting on. He sees her pain, sees her suffering and is vowing to protect her no matter what the cost. His is Prepared to Fall for her.The growth these two character go through in this book is simply amazing. The pain the love and the denial is palpable. Making this drama filled book one of my faves for the year. Adam won my heart with his growth through out the story and his will to protect and care for Cassie before he even knew he loved her.. EJ has done it again delivering an emotionally amazing story. I would recommend reading the first book Prepared to Fight before reading this one. Prepared to fall is Adam and Cassie's story who we met in the first book. Adam has been in love with his best friend Live for a long time but now that shes married will he be able to move on? Cassie is a fighter and strong willed who finally realizes that her boyfriend Jay is slowly taking over her life and changing her a bit. After re-evaluating her relationship shes having doubt about staying with him. But can Cassie make a break from Jay or will he be able to keep her right where he wants her? Adam has always watched Cassie from afar ever since they had a one night stand. They ended up becoming really close friends. but can they overcome both of their pasts and have happiness together? Can Adam help Cassie get away from Jay? I was engrossed from the beginning and could not put this book down. Cant wait to see where EJ takes this series in the next book.

If you thought book 1 was excellent, then you haven't seen anything yet. This book blew it out of the water. It brought the feels on top of the great characters, story and writing. There is a history between these two characters that you will better understand if you read 'Prepared to Fight' first. In Cass' case you will see how she is before she is brought down by the very unpleasant, controlling and abusive Jay. It is incredibly frightening how quickly her wears her down and breaks down her self-confidence and belief in herself. It it Adam who helps her find her inner strength to break free from him.I loved the time Adam and Cass spent getting to know each other and developing their relationship. I loved the way Adam helped her rediscover her inner strength and Cass in the way she encouraged him to dream about his future. This was an all around great read!***Reviewed for LBM Book Blog***

Five Emotional Stars! Cassie is dating Jay but he starts to become a bit to demanding for her which causes her to rethink their relationship. Adam is watching Cassie from afar making sure she is safe ever since they had a one night stand. Cassie and Adam become close friends, but can they overcome their past to have their own happiness? This book had me feeling all different kinds of emotions for the characters and I felt like I knew what they were going through. Ms. Shortall writes a wonderful story. I was engaged from the beginning and could not put it down. This is the second book in the Golden Oaks Series and can be read as a stand alone novel. I will be looking for the next book in the series!I received this book as an ARC for an honest review. I enjoyed reading this ARC. The writing style flowed well and was well written and easy to follow. The story shows the 2 main characters, Adam Ashworth and Cassie Burton that despite their strong personalities they too have insecurities and the need to underestimate themselves. The story begins with Adam loving his best friend Liv who happens to be in love with Nate. Adam and Cassie hook up one night and then Adam bails on Cassie with no explanation. Months go by and the wedding day of Liv and Nate approaches placing Adam and Cassie in the same rooms. This where the story blossoms. Without giving the storyline away, Cassie learns who truly cares about her because of her present circumstances. Adam and Cassie become true friends and their relationship progresses.

This is the second book in this series and they should be read in order. This book picks up shortly after the first one ends. Adam is forced to realize he will never be will his best friend who he has been in love with for a while, after all she is marrying someone else. Adam and Cassie had a night of passion months ago and he feels guilty. After all he slept with her the night his best friend got engaged. Sleeping with Cassie was his way of dealing with it. Now with the wedding coming up Adam feels like he needs to apologize to Cassie for what happened. Cassie is training for a big kickboxing fight. Cassie has family issues and her only real close friends are the Oakes brothers. She also has a boyfriend Jay who is also her coach. She has been leaning on him more and more but things with Jay are changing. He seems more controlling and get angry easier than he did before. Lately things are getting worse especially when the wedding rolls around and Cassie has to spend time with Adam and the Oakes brothers more. Adam has noticed the way Jay treats Cassie and doesn’t like it. Adam has also noticed Cassie as more than a friend. He finds himself wants to spend more time with her and get to know her better. Cassie has also noticed Adam as more than a friend. She feels guilty because she has a boyfriend but the more aggressive Jay is with Cassie the more she notices Adam. Will Adam be able to help Cassie? How far will Jay go will Cassie? When will Cassie realize how Jay is acting and behaving isn’t okay? Jay mad me so mad and so did Cassie for a while. I was frustrated with how she allowed Jay to treat her and how she mad excuses for his actions. Adam knew that confronting her about it wouldn’t work. He was there for her and when she was ready to deal with Jay he helped her with that too. I really liked how Adam and Cassie relationship developed. He may not have seen Cassie that way right away but they were friends and then became more. I love the characters in this series and how they are always there for each other. They all just seem to know what their friends need and how to help them. I look forward to the next book in this series. I love E.J. and her books.I was given this book in return for an honest review.

Prepared to Fall is another amazingly and brilliant read by E.J. Shortall. I always love reading books by E.J. just because they all seem so 'real'. This one is no different. I immediately fell in love with the characters, the story-line, and pretty much everything about this book. Cassie and Adam start off rocky in the beginning. But as the story progresses, you see a entirely new side to them. Cassie is a strong, independent woman out to reach her dreams of becoming a MMA fighter. Adam is coming to terms with deep feelings he thought he had to someone close to him. Cassie and Adam quickly become close friends and you can't deny the attraction between the two. Honestly, Prepared to Fall was a very emotional read for me. I cannot tell you how many times I wanted to shake Cassie, or pull her close and tell her everything would be alright. I felt for her and what she went through. It's a touchy situation for sure, but it's one that will make your heart break and then get angry the next. The thing is, Adam is there for Cassie every step of the way. He tries his very best to make sure he can be everything Cassie needs, and boy he sure did make me swoon more than once. I won't say much more about this part, because I don't want to spoil it for you. This is a book you need to read and see for yourself. If you've read Prepared to Fight, you'll see Adam and Cassie and get a bit of their background. Of course you get their full story in this book, and it's another one of those moments that you can't help but feel bad for them. You'll also see characters from Prepared to Fight in this one, and I loved how everyone is still so close. I cannot express how great this book is. I hated it ended, and I can't wait to see what E.J. has in store for the Golden Oakes crew. I highly recommend checking this and any other books by E.J. I'm definitely in book hangover from this one!

Having read Prepared to Fight, I was excited to get my hands on this book.Adam and Cassie's story is a heartbreaking one to read. I think even though this is the 2nd book in a standalone series, you do need to read book 1 to understand the dynamic of all the other characters. While I did enjoy Adam and Cassie's story, I much prefered Nate and Liv. I felt like I wasn't pulled into this story straight away. I really enjoyed the story, when it did pick up pace. Cassie isn't in a good place but she cant see that whats happening isnt her fault and is something that shouldn't be happening. Adam is a brillant character, he brings the best out in Cassie and helps her through her struggles. They are a great couple and bounce off each other perfectly. The storyline is slow going at first but once it picks up, I had to keep reading to find out what the end result would be. The story has some very heart breaking moments, that are very hard to read. I loved the ending, I think it was perfect to finish off the story. 4 stars.

Adam and Cassandra have a brief fling while in France. Cassandra repairs their relationship by being the bigger person and having an easy going conversation with him. Her new relationship with Jay isn't great but shes blind to it. Her friends can see it but will she listen to them? Will Adam figure out his real feelings or will Jay take her forever? This is the second book in the Golden Oakes series but can be read as a standalone. I loved the characters Cassandra doesn't have the greatest relationship with her parents and it rings true from the very beginning.Adam hides from his true self. He believes he fell in love with his best friend but when real love hits him in the face he realises what he felt before is nothing like what he feels now.Another great book by the wonderful E.J Shortall

This isn't an easy book to read but that is one of the many reasons that you should. Cassie is in an abusive relationship but as is often the case, it's obvious to everyone but herself. As things escalate and Cassie finds it more difficult to make excuses, a previous fling, Adam is biding his time in the wings. How long will it be before they both admit their feelings for each other or will it be too late when they finally do. This book tackles difficult situations, complex family dynamics and makes you want to shake, scream at, snog or slaughter each of the characters. With that depth of feeling, you know it's a great book. Another fabulous read from EJ Shortall.

Prepared to Fall is so emotional to read. This is Adam and Cassie's story who we meet in the first book Prepared to Fight and I would read it before you read this. I couldn't wait to read Adam and Cassie story. It draws you in with the twists and it kept me glued to my kindle.Cassie is training to be a MMA fighter, her trainer is also her boyfriend Jay, and he has control issues. Adam is trying to move on now that his love/ best friend is married. After having a hot one night stand with Cassie, they become good friends. So when Adam notices changes in Cassie, he tries to step in to help her. I liked Adam and Cassie. This is amazing story!
