Half My World the Garden of Anne Spencer a History and Guide Reviews
-
The poet, political activist and librarian, Anne Bethel Spencer, was both a Virginian and national treasure. Her poetry and garden served as unique expressions of herself as a freedom fighter, naturalist, intellectual and early 20th century " race woman". I had the opportunity to visit her garden and see the writing cottage that her husband, Edward, built for her behind their home. Such notables as Dr. W.E.B. DuBois and Langston Hughes visited Spencer's home. It is a deeply rich and well loved landscape. I recommend not only this book, but a tour of her home and garden.

Anne Spencer was a fascinating woman, yet I found the author of the book to be redundant and almost tedious in some places. The structure of the chapters lacked fluidity. However, spite of these things I did enjoy the book a great deal.
