Yet another great NR work in the Night Tales series. Intense, dark, brooding, angsty, dramatic, and slightly paranormal. This last angle could've worked against the story, but it somehow made perfect sense, adding to the plot, instead of making it sound ridiculous and pretentious.Loved the characters, especially the tension between Deborah and Gage. They had problems from the beginning, not everything about them and their relationship was black-and-white, and for us, lovers of the gray area, this was a real treat...Even the "slight" love-triangle worked in favor of the story, moving it forward, adding to the layers and depth...Sheesh, I don't know what more to say. Despite its age, I loved this book.

The character interactions were all real, the mystery subtle, but parts of this were hokey. The vigilante was pure Batman/Bruce Wayne (except this one could turn invisible. really!) Set in Urbana? Why not either use NYC or some other East Coast city but with fictional characters and history or create some other city name. This felt too batman-y and comic book. Felt campy.

Not too often I rate a NR book 1 star, but this one deserved it.Think of it as a generic version of Batman/Bruce Wayne with the added convenience of invisibility. It even comes with a "bat cave" in Gage's house, a house which is very similar to that of Roarke's mansion in the "In Death" series. The reviews had me skeptical and I now understand why, but, I wanted an update on Deborah's sister, Cilla, from the first installment of the series-which I actually liked. Once I got that info I basically skimmed it for highlights til I reached an ending that earned an eye roll and an "I can't believe I actually read this. Thank God it's over." shake of my head.Hopefully I won't see any more of "Nemesis" in future installments. But wait! He has the power of invisibility since recovering from a coma so I don't need to see him at all!

Weird, not what I'd expect for a RS. Gage was a mixture between Batman, Superman, Invisible Man & Spiderman..........As I said WEIRD!!

"I am Vengeance."I am Hot Masked Sex."I am - NEMESIS!", Nora Roberts wanted to write BATMAN IN LOVE, only she didn't want to deal with Time-Warner over rights. So she created a superrich ex-cop masked vigilante of her own, Nemesis, who wears the Non-Union Canadian Equivalent of Will Eisner's The Spirit costume (trenchcoat, snap-brim hat, domino mask), from Frank Miller's Mostly-Awful The Spirit Movie.......and yes, that IS Stana Katic grinning in the background!has a variant on The Shadow's Invisibility Superpower, lives in the family mansion with his ex-con housekeeper/bodyguard/emergency medic Frank, and who as Gage Guthrie pretends to be a playboy. Or Maybe Oliver Queen...?Into his life charges Assistant DA Deborah O'Roarke (sister of Cilla O'Roarke of NR's previous series entryNight Shift), who first meets him while he's Nemesis - and there are, yes, immediate sparks flying even if she doesn't approve of masked vigilantes! The next night she meets him at a social 'do as Gutherie, and immediate sparks fly even if she doesn't approve of rich wastrels offering her foot massages, either -so, yeah, Deb's pretty picky when it comes to her guys. However, the more she runs into Gutherie or Nemesis, the more she keeps confusing the two - until on one Hot Summer Night Nemesis comes into her apartment and takes her to bed, and in the throes of orgasm she realizes the two men she knows she shouldn't be so strongly attracted to are, in fact, the same guy! (Guess that makes her smarter than Lois Lane, at least....)I kid because I love - NIGHT SHADOW does an adept job of fusing romance novels and superhero comics into an entertaining whole. While it's true that Nemesis is a pastiche character, he works quite well as a superhero, right down to the vengeance-driven motivation for his actions (while a cop he and his partner were betrayed, his partner killed and him nearly so, by a slimy drug lord) and handwave of his superpowers. Deb works nicely as a woman who's fallen, hard, for a man on a quest she's not sure she can accept - and while I won't give away the ending, let's just say it lets them come to terms with that quest in a way they're both good with, so they can share a life together. The supporting cast, with includes the family that came out of the previous book about a decade later, are enjoyable in ways that presage the large casts of NR's later Eve Dallas policiers. While short, this book doesn't feel rushed - it feel just right to tell its blended story.

Este livro surpreendeu-me. Não estava à espera dos poderes do Gage Guthrie. Mas achei interessante andarem os dois atrás dos criminosos, cada um de sua forma e a tentar demover o outro de o fazer daquela maneira.

This book was kind of weird, with a hero who led a double life, as an ex-cop turned businessman and a super-hero of sorts, working at night in a mask protecting people and having the power of invisibility, then he meets ethical ADA Deborah( the sister of the heroine from Night Shift) and falls for her.Deb believes in the law and feels the pull towards two men who turn out to be one and she doesn't know how to reconcile her job with the secrets the man she loves keeps. The story moves too fast, with an evil organization in the middle responsible for what happened to the hero when he was on the force, I found the ending too abrupt.

This is reminiscent of a gritty film noir graphic novel, where the palettes are all in stark contrast - a lot of black and red and rooms filled with the wispy fog of cigars. Essentially, Nora Roberts does Batman - and it is sexy, dangerous and atmospheric- and I absolutely loved it.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first in the series, it just reminded me of Bruce Wayne AKA Batman. I just didn't find the story appealing what so ever, just kept having flash backs to Batman Begins and Dark Knight. The characters themselves were justs annoying, I had high hopes for Deborah after reading 'Night Shift' the previous book which I thoroughly enjoyed and gave us a small incite into her life which I was looking forwards to finding out more about.Don't think I will carry on with the series.

Second Nora Roberts book I read almost exactly like the first. Young lawyer threatened, saved by a masked avenger. She has feelings for him, he stirs her blood. A rich man falls in love with her quite quickly. She has feelings for him too. Turns out they are the same guy. Passionate descriptive sex because they've fallen so madly in love in a very short time. Oh, brother. No more Nora Roberts for me.

This is a five book series so I will do one review for all five. The books are great. The characters are easy to like although at times you wonder what they are thinking. The 3rd one has an odd twist that doesn't really fit in with the series but doesn't diminish from the storyline. I would recommend all these books although not so much to be listened to as the narrator isn't the best. I almost didn't listen to the series but I'm glad I did.

Another Nora Roberts series I missed, Night Series. And again. What can I say? She rights with many twists and turns with great character development. Love her books as she usually ends all her books with a warm, fuzzy feeling. Looking forward to rest of series.

Idomu, bet ta mistika... daro pšššš. Vos ne fantastinis kūrinukas paaugliams. Visiškai ne Roberts. Bent jau sunku patikėti, kad čia rimtos meilės romanų rašytojos darbas.

This is the second book to the Night Series by Nora Roberts. Content-wise - I was slightly more satisfied compared to Night Shift! The story sets off in the slums and alleys of Urbana, with a very disciplined public defender Deb and the business-man-by-day, Superman-by-night Gage Guthrie playing the leads to this plot. Though their approach is different - their target is the one and same person who is a Drug trafficker. (Carlos Montega) The story line can be summarized to a war of Ethics over Superheroism. Deb is a charming, vibrant public defender who is naive, sexy and oh my, she doesn't know that she actually *is* sexy! Good Lord! While Night Shift was fully focused on sex, erotica and the so-called feelings, Nora Roberts adds a whiff of Super human abilities to Gage in this tale. Going across to the state of coma, Guthrie is blessed only to recover with the power to turn invisible at will. Does the author expect her readers to be fools, taking in the plot as she shoves it? Yes, there's a limit to patience and logic - and Nora Roberts breaches both of them effortlessly! How is it that all her protagonist men are Multi-billionaires with a love to protecting the law and thereby choosing to become Cops? I'll never understand WHY they're all filthy rich, yet fall for an average lady. And always - ALWAYS - Nora Roberts' leading lady is a hot woman who doesn't know that she is THAT sexy. She turns down our man, she stamps his attempts all along, only to fall into the bed with him later and confess that she had loved him from the beginning. Of course, let's not forget - The lady also feels mixed and confused about her feelings and doesn't get it straight until she has had wild, carnal sex with the man! Half the book, Deb is either kissing or making love with Gage; Either that, or she's saying "I don't know if what I'm feeling for you is right Gage.. I wish I could understand myself!"The plot is decent, but I only wish the author knew how to write so that she'd keep her audience hooked till the end. The murders and death pass by casually without leaving the slightest feeling of thrill or alarm. That's how flat and boring it is, across those portions! Stay away from this book. This isn't even worth being on the casual, pleasure read list. It took me a very long time to get done with it. And worse - I even slept while reading this book once! Shucks.

Audible Audiobook. Audiobook just over seven hours long, narrated by Kate Rudd.Gage = Lead male character = Charming, tall and handsome, ridiculously rich, Type A chauvinist.Nemesis = Charming superman-vigilante, with a bizarre paranormal ability, who always seems to be in the Night Shadow ready to rescue a damsel is distress. He wears all black, including a mask (Spoooooky).Deborah = Lead female character = Assistant District Attorney (the damsel in distress), career obsessed, beautiful, swoons to the charms of both. Before the end of the first chapter you’ll have no trouble guessing Nemesis = Gage, both of them give Deborah weak knees. Deborah is written to be the strong female lead, but succumbs to the sexual innuendo of these two characters like a high-hormone-laden teenaged girl. Her reactions are awkward and silly. The romance aspect of Night Shadow is so mawkish your eyes will roll back to bounce on your tailbone. Fast-forwarded a lot through several required, and lengthy, sex scenes to get back to the mystery. Typical of Nora Roberts, 70% of the novel is sickly sentimental foo-foo, 30% mystery, and point of view is an author whim. Nora has a wonderful way of throwing conventional writing dictums out the window :-).For anyone familiar with the In Death series by Nora Roberts/J.D.Robb, the Deborah/Gage dynamic is just too similar to that of Eve/Roark. Coffee references, Gage being filthy rich … even has a secret high-tech room in his mansion, Deborah being in law enforcement … all uncomfortably similar. Roberts/Robb should simply adjust character names and re-work a bit to create Night Shadow - In Death. Might consider changing the narrator to Susan Erickson for the audiobook and ta-da … new book in the In Death series. The story line is pretty basic, but good. A cop killing drug dealer is the target of the DA, and for personal reasons, the target of Gage. When the two can stay focused on the bad guys instead of dewey-doe-eyed lovey-dovies, it’s not a bad story.Kate Rudd is okay, clear diction. Over emotes a bit.If you like Nora Roberts romance novels, you’ll like much more of the story than I. *shrug*

Yes, even throwing all kinds of disclaimers into the mix regarding my knowing that I'm really not the target audience for this kind of thing, that it's harmless escapism for folks who like a bit of romance and thriller mixed together, and admitting that it was pretty readable (which many 'better' books have not been), this was still pretty crap. The story concerns a strong female lead, who is a lawyer, who is independent and classy and beautiful and intelligent and all those other wonderful things that heroines are. During her work putting away criminals, she gets involved in some dangerous situations (involving drugs and South Americans, naturally) and is saved by a mysterious hero. She also falls for an initially arrogant rich handsome man, and her love of course eventually brings him round and it is revealed that he is some Bat-man stroke Superman crime fighting vigilante with a normal alter-ego. Together they crack the mystery and bring the (oh what a surprise, it involves a cover-up by seemingly trustworthy authorities) baddies to justice. Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed some of it as it was a pacy story with some moments of wit. I'm trying not to come over as a snob, but there was *so* much cheese in it, so many randomly inserted romantic/erotic clinches, such ridiculous dialogue and descriptions (at one point she notices his hands fit perfectly round the stem of a wine glass.. and he notices that she has a watch on, which is 'set to the minute', as if this is somehow important!) and a worrying amount of times when 'harmless romantic escapism' came over to me as ridiculously misogynistic - feminists would be up in arms at the frequency and ease with which this independent woman turns pathetic and gooey, and some of the love scenes were rather 'rapey' in places.Still, if the genre is your kind of thing - Beverley Barton and the like - it would make for an enjoyable read. Slightly formulaic as it is, you can understand why Nora Roberts makes a good living.

This sequel to _Night Shift_ was just as fun as the first though this novel has an added paranormal element. Deborah is working on a tough case with the DA office and she's running into some questionable characters that aren't too happy with what she's uncovering. She finds herself in a difficult situation and is saved by Nemesis, the masked vigilante that goes against everything that she believes in. Regardless of their varying beliefs, they find themselves drawn to each other. To make matters more complicated, Deborah is also suddenly pursued by the billionaire, Gage, and she finds herself falling for him too. Can she really be in love with two men? Basically, this is a definite romance novel and there are some serious moments of ridiculousness. However, it made me really happy because of all of the ridiculousness. I had read the prequel a few weeks back and I was very excited to find out that it was a part of a series. I think I shall definitely be checking out more romance novels for some light reading.
