A New England Girlhood: An Affectionate Recreation of Things Past Reviews
2.5* I appreciate her introduction - "My pieces, although their background is the scenery and characters that bounded my childhood, are intended less to be about the real and ascertainable past than about my memory of it: and memory, as a mode of thinking, tends to burst spontaneously into fantasy at every turn. Some of the events in the stories are true to fact, some not. What interested me in writing them was to try to catch the reverberations from childhood that sometimes make it seem as if the first few years of our lives constitute a riddle which it is a lifework to solve." If memoir writers were scrupulously truthful, I think they would have to agree with Hales statement about memory. Which doesn't cancel out their work, as it very much remains a product of the author's perception of his/her history.Aside from the introduction, Hale's book was interesting in that it tells what it was like to be a teen in the early 1900's - and I found that girls were surprisingly the same then as they are now. The book may not be brilliant, or the most memorable, but it is well-written and would be especially interesting to Bostonians. I enjoyed it.
This seems to be mostly collected magazine pieces, so each chapter feels tidily wrapped up with a bow. The parts that felt the least commercial and the most authentic to me were the author's memories of her parents and an aunt. As the title says, this isn't a strict memoir but is somewhat fictionalized or embroidered.
The good life in Boston in the early 1900s.
Didn't like it as much as the one I read accidentally, but I do love autobiographies by women. Bittersweet memories of growing up privileged in Boston in the early 20th century.
