Yes... Well... It had to happen. Even the great ones have bad eggs.'And this collection of stories, they did not hold up to the normal standard of Agatha. 2-3 of the stories were good the rest were just plain boring.

Interesting collection of stories. Some are better than the others. Not the usual garden-variety whodunit plots...although I am a sucker for those!!!Most of the stories are psychological thrillers and/or deal with the supernatural, one way or the other. I suppose after watching TV shows like the X-Files and Supernatural, the stories were pretty tame. However, for the time when they were written, I thought the plots were quite impressive in how dark they were. One thing though that is starting to annoy me is how ethnocentric Ms. Christie was. This attitude of "the Brits are perfect and the foreigners are archaic and evil" seems to resonate particularly in this book!!! The "foreigners" always tend to be the "bad guys", which can get kind of old. It's surprising since Ms. Christie's most famous detective Hercule Poirot is foreign, which leads me to believe that she was not really anti-foreigners per se. I have been reading Agatha Christie for years now and it has only started bothering me lately. Perhaps that is the influence of the times we are living in now!!!

The others

Some of the stories were very atmospheric and intriguing, but there were some I just couldn't care about that ended flatly, without allowing the reader to get invested. Still, there were some gems here that I loved, such as The Call of Wings and The Witness for the Prosecution. It was nice to read something of Christie that was so different from her usual detective novels and I daresay she could have written a great gothic novel. (Has she ever?)The Hound of Death: 1/5The Red Signal: 2/5The Fourth Man: 3/5The Gipsy: 2/5The Lamp: 4/5Wireless: 3/5The Witness for the Prosecution: 5/5The Mystery of the Blue Jar: 3/5The Strange Case of Sir Arthur Carmichael: 4/5The Call of Wings: 4.5/5The Last Seance: 1/5SOS: 2.5/5

I remember being terrified of this collection of short stories when I first read it aged 12. They aren't just clever mystery stories, many of them are genuinely creepy and shocking - and absolutely brilliant. My favourite story from the collection, The Witness for the Prosecution, is also a play (currently running in London) - I've been obsessed with it for years, and it never disappoints! 12+*Please note: this review is meant as a recommendation only. Please do not use it in any marketing material, online or in print, without asking permission from me first. Thank you!*

Ooooooo!!!

After having dealt with the classic doggie of Baskervilles, I figured out I might continue with the theme for a bit longer. I also thought it would be nice to read a real book for a change - instead of an ebook, that is.The Hound of Death is a collection of 12 short stories that despite their differing themes and genres (!) form a nice, clean ensemble. The stories consist of "classic" ghost stories, ghost stories or mysteries with a touch of Scooby Doo (you know, in which there is a criminal of some kind behind the seemingly supernatural phenomena), and traditional detective/crime/court stories. Despite being different, the short stories share a number of motives: dreams, mediums, un-/subconscious, and people (especially women) who have lost their minds. Of course, the author is loyal to her usual style, and ends each story with a twist of some kind, and quite often I was indeed surprised by them, even if I had guessed what might be coming a number of pages earlier.I was slightly confused, however, by Mrs. Christie's tendency to use a male character as the central character. This might be typical or at least related to the time when the stories were written. Whatever the case, it is not really that important, just something that I happened to notice. The Hound of Death is a rather nice way to spend evenings and/or nursing marathons. While I did have to read an ebook at its side (for those nocturnal reading moments when my Hobbit-sized companion so passionately protested against switching the bedside lamp on), it can hardly be blamed on the book itself. The stories are incredibly well written, and many of them would have had the potential for something longer, maybe even a full novel. My favourite story was probably "The Witness for the Prosecution", but the choice was not easy by any means. I might have changed my mind by tomorrow morning. :D

I thoroughly enjoyed several of these stories, particularly The Red Signal and Witness for the Prosecution. Both of them were more of the typical Christie murder mystery with a twist than many of the other stories in the collection. I liked the paranormal twist to the stories though personally I preferred the ones where it was rationally explained at the conclusion. Mysteries that aren’t really solved but are left to the unexplained aren’t a favorite of mine.

I just submitted a short story to a competition so I decided to read a collection of short crime stories, to see how the Queen of Crime did it. Unfortunately, this edition is mysteriously devoid of any hint that it is, in fact, a collection of sub-par M.R Jamesesque horror stories, and not crime stories at all.The solutions here are secondary to the melodramatic otherworldly causes. Even where the causes are very worldly, the sense of dull dread that hangs over them is clearly the intention, rather than their pedestrian answers.Haunted houses, ghostly signs, mysterious voices heard crying out - all these and more occur here, but the real hero of all these stories is psychology. Clearly written at a time when books on the world of the brain and the mind were de rigeur, nearly every story features some man of medicine who believes that we can't rule out the concept of supernatural powers belonging to the mind, though of course they would be scientifically provable once discovered. Sometimes these men are genuine, sometimes they are charlatans, but the thread of scientific-supernatural runs through all these tales. At a guess, I'd say 70% of Christie's decent, pleasant narrators are just Hastings in another guise; when we don't have a first-person narrator, some of the more interesting subjects are allowed to emerge. The eminently sensible woman who moves into a haunted house; the old lady perfectly prepared for death. Her third person stories are always better; she gives herself much more room for devious glee and better-drawn characters.Witness for the Prosecution is most certainly the odd man out here. By far the best story of the lot, it barely rates in the supernatural realm, and only the fact of the dramatic reveal ending give it the right to be in a gathering of blood-boiling heart-pounders. This is the only story here I could rightfully say would be helpful to a student of short mystery tales; everything else is rather silly.

The Hound of Death is yet again a short-story by Agatha Christie. It is nice but some readers will expect a lot more considering the level of her other novels. It becomes difficult to add mystery, a plot which keeps you guessing & the big reveal all in a short-story. I personally liked it & is a good way to spend your Sunday evening!

Well this was a bit of a change from a normal Agatha Christie book. I really enjoyed this one, as it dealt very much so on using the occult in each of the short stories. If you enjoy a touch of the bizarre or a bit of occult mystery then you may enjoy this book.

I had a great time with this book. Not only are the stories easy to read, they also have this atmosphere of mystery and fright that is not easy to create. This isn't what one would generally expect when picking up an Agatha Christie book, no doubt. There isn't a perfectly reasonable explanation to everything as it usually is, but it leaves just enough room to imaginative people such as myself, and explains everything that absolutely needs to be explained.(view spoiler)[That all said, the stories are very different from one another; there isn't always a supernatural element present. Sometimes the story is just an allegory that toys with our own ideas of what the supernatural should be, which is actually really fun and works as a break from all the fantastic ideas that the book presents. This huge contrast presents itself between stories such as The Gipsy and The Mystery of the Blue Jar, and they are evenly distributed throughout this piece in a way that makes it pleasantly light and fun to read.My favorite story is The Call of Wings. I love that it has so many elements of mythology in it and, although the way they are presented might not be fully understandable for those who aren't familiar with greek mythology and particularly the figure of Pan, it develops in a way that is easy to relate to, and pokes into ideas such as materialism and faith in a way that is not too pushy or imposing.Other stories I didn't like as much, such as The Last Seance and The Strange Case of Sir Arthur Carmichael, on account that they were a bit too predictable, although still very entertaining and curious. (hide spoiler)]Overall, I would definitely recommend this to others, but it's a bit worrysome that a lot of people may not like it simply due to the weight of Agatha Christie's name, and how we make an automatic connection to brilliant crime mysteries. This isn't the case, but it's still a really awesome read in my opinion.
