The stories and photos in LOVE HEELS bring the CCI experience to life for the reader and introduce them to many of the thousands of selfless volunteers who make up the breeders, puppy raisers, and trainers of these amazing dogs. From the joyful hours when litters are born, through the playful months of puppy hood, these team members cherish their canine charges until the day they tearfully, yet proudly, pass them on to those who need them most. It is their dedication to henping others and overwhelming love for the puppies that makes it possible or hundreds of people with disabilities to live more independent lives and enjoy an enhanced quality of life. CCI was created for the human partners, for whom performing everyday tasks seemed impossible, until they meet their canine companions. Booktalk: Dogs. If you're a dog person, you know that these animals can be so many things: loyal, friendly, unconditional, even silly. But most of all: special. The most special of these dogs are service dogs. This is the story of service dogs who are trained by an organization called Canine Companions for Independence. It tells how puppies are first trained and socialized by volunteer puppy raisers. After a year, the pups undergo six months of training at Canine Companions, learning as much as 60 different commands and things such as how to open doors and pull a wheelchair. Then the time comes when they are matched with humans who need a little extra help to live independently. A dog that is matched with someone who is deaf is trained to alert her when the alarm clock or microwave goes off. Another dog helps a quadriplegic man open doors and pick up stuff on the floor. You'll find out how very special and hard-working these dogs are. And you'll be inspired learning how much LOVE HEELS.

Cute book, although rather dated in parts (it was published in 2003). Still, great stories and beautiful photographs.
