Her novels and short stories speak to women and men about their most intense relationships and heartfelt feelings. In this collection of five short stories and a novella, Ms. Godwin is at her best. In the title novella, "Mr. Bedford," a young would-be writer spends time in England under the strange and watchful eye of a rather unusual elderly couple; in "Amanuensis," a charming college student cares for a famous but blocked novelist, with unpredictable results; and in "The Angry Year," a rebellious student is drawn to two different kinds of men until she discovers what she has been running to and from.Witty, insightful, and a pleasure to read, Mr. Bedford and the Muses will turn every reader into a fan of Gail Godwin."IRRESISTIBLE."--Los Angeles Times"A SUBTLE WORK OF ALMOST CRYSTALLINE CLARITY. . . Mr. Bedford and the Muses Reviews
I picked up this book at the library book sale in Mendocino this past spring, because I like Gail Godwin & had not read any of her short stories. (I'm usually not a short story fan.) The novelette, "Mr. Bedford", is wonderful! Loved bitchy, lying little drama queen Carrie, & the formerly fabulous Mr. & Mrs. Easton, along with the London setting and, of course, Mr. Bedford! The other short stories in the book were OK. There was almost vampire sex in the one called "St. John"! Seriously!! ;)
I have long been a Gail Godwin fan and loved this collection. Each story is centered around a female protagonist connected with others in unique relationships, learning much about herself and finding personal direction. Very entertaining!
A novella and five short stories, each of which features a writer. Each is also a variation on the theme of the writers mining their experiences - ranging from mundane to complex relationships - for the raw material of their work. Compelling writing.
A good book with a few short stories under one title. It didn't leave me awe struck, but more in a sense of "What?". And couldn't understand why some people would put up with such nonsense and then go back for more. Yes we all have our muses we just don't deserve to put up with such abuse.
This book of short stories will keep you turning the pages.......I am usually not a fan of short stories, but Gail Godwin is one of my favorite authors and a fantastic story teller. This is a great book to curl up with on a rainy day!
I loved this book! I've read it several times. I always forget how "Mr. Bedford" ends, no matter how many times I have read it. The other stories are just as good. One or two not so wonderful, but overall, I think it's an excellent book.
A fine reminder of why I love her work so much. And an author's note on the subject of muses which was of interest as well. Godwin is simply a writer I will always read -- yes, even once I've read all I know of -- I've already read several favorites multiple times.
just not impressed- never have liked short stories much, except Sci Fi. One story seemed repetitious to another one.
I love this book. I keep re-reading the title story every several years and sending it to new people.
Stories about writers and writing. Title story is the best but all are revealing and interesting.
