All jihadi groups, whether Shiite or Sunni, Arab or not, are characterized by a similar bloodlust. Murawiec characterizes this belief structure as identical to that of Europe's medieval millenarians and apocalyptics, arguing that both jihadis and their European cousins shared in a Gnostic ideology: a God-given mission endowed the Elect with supernatural powers and placed them above the common law of mankind. Although the ideology of jihad is essentially Islamic, Murawiec traces the political technologies used by modern jihad to the Bolsheviks. Their doctrines of terror as a system of rule were appropriated by radical Islam through multiple lines of communication. This book brings history, anthropology, and theology to bear to understand the mind of jihad that has declared war on the West and the world....

A challenging read--took me many weeks. Some parts are so worth reading -- the section on the role of "honor" in Arab culture, (Chapter 4) entirely foreign to our notion and crucial for our understanding; clear statements like: "There never was an Islam without jihad"--again, crucial for our understanding today. The glorification of death which renders life, therefore, of such little consequence (Chap.1), and more. But the author tries to tie all this to the various totalitarian horror movements of the 20th century and even to the Gnosticism of the ancient world. These sections were arcane and quite difficult to read. The fact is that Islam alone in all its primary sources is more than adequate to explain today's daily news, and in places Murawiec concedes that also. For a short, clearer read, I recommend a recent piece by Andrew McCarthy (prosecutor of the Blind Sheikh for the 1993 WTC attacks), called "Islam: Facts or Dreams?" Google it. Tackle Murawiec *after* that, not before.
