I thought this book was really cute! I really did enjoy this book and the story line. I like how this book taught fire safety in a cute way. I also like how it talked about the dragon being afraid of fire, but he still wanted to do the job and face his fears. I especially think this is a good lesson for kids to learn, that it is not bad to face your fears and overcome them. I really loved the illustrations in this book, they were cute, funny, and very colorful. If I were to read this to an age group I would pick kindergarten through second grade. It would also bring up fire safety in the classroom and it would be a good time to bring up where they should go in case a fire happens. It is always good to prepare.

Mommy's review from 2/5/09 - This is a great book for toddlers - Julia loved it. She was amazed and didn't say a word throughout the whole book. It's long enough to be a real nice bedtime story but at the same time not too long that she wakes back up and wants to play. The story has a great lesson in it about fire safety. It actually has a bunch of smaller lessons in one really. The author managed to include a quick reference to stop, drop and roll, how to not try to extinguish a stove top fire with water, etc. There was also a nice little lesson at the end about how when you overcome your fears it's nice to move onto something else and see what else you can conquer. This was the one of the first two books Julia got out on her brand new library card instead of using mine so she was really proud. (Just threw that in there so I'd remember when she's older!) :D

This is a very cute story about Spark the Dragon who wants to become a Volunteer firefighter. The catch is he’s scared of fire which makes being a dragon quite tough. Spark get’s teased by the other dragons for not being able to chase away burglars and knights. Spark takes his job as a firefighter very seriously though and commits himself to the training and getting in shape. This book is filled with fun illustrations and beautiful colours.

I read this book for a "firefighter" themed story time and prefaced/followed it up with a cute dragon puppet I got at IKEA. The little ones enjoyed this story about "Joe the Dragon's brother", Spark, and loved interacting with "Joe the Dragon" possibly more. He had a little heart-to-heart with one of my most enthusiastic regulars about how playing with fire is no, not "fun", but definitely unsafe. Uh, here's hoping that stuck.

Dragon who is scared of fire joins the volunteer firefighters in a small town. Accurate portrayal of all the things firefighters must do to train, but gets a little more whimsical and unrealistic toward the end. (As if dragons aren't already whimsical? Anyway, you get the picture.) I can see this going over very well for storytime. Also a hit for any little ones with a firefighter fascination.

I really liked this book. It could be used to teach children some good concepts such as overcoming weaknesses and turning them into strengths and not giving into fears or giving up. This is a good story about Spark the dragon who is afraid of fire so he decides to face his fear by becoming a firefighter. He is able to turn his weakness into a strength.

This book had wonderful illustrations and was a great read. I would use this to introduce fires and how to act appropriately when one occurs around my students. It would be great if I could have a firefighter come in and read the book to my students and at the end have them practice: stop, drop, and roll.

This book was a good lesson about over coming your fears to help others who are in danger. Spark had to overcome his fear of fire, but learned that when things get tough, you have to be tougher. I liked the illustrations that helped the story along. This would be a very helpful story to tell student when talking about our fears and helping others.

This was a cute story about overcoming fears.Spark is a dragon that is afraid of fire. Problematic as you can imagine. In order to fire his fear, he joins a volunteer firefighter unit. After slowly building up his confidence, he uses his dragon fire for the first time to save horses and cows that are locked in a burning day thus saving the day.

It's not very exciting. But, it makes up for that by being very informative. I learned a lot about what it means to be a firefighter. I was also pleasantly surprised at the gender equality, which is there, but not mentioned. It is assumed that there are female fire fighters ... so there they are ... love it.

Pretty cute story. A dragon is afraid of fire! He applies to be a firefighter! He's hired, but he's still a little scared. One day, he's faced with a situation where he's the only one who can save a group of scared animals. Can he fight the fire to save his friends?

More a fire safety and facing your fears theme than dragon. Art is colorful and comic, but a little cluttered for distance like ST groups.
