Except that it’s not quite…typical. It’s full of the requisite, rough-hewn mountaineers, but these men seem more animal than man.And one of the rude strangers brings out the animal in her during an embarrassingly orgasmic-and scorching-sexual encounter in an alley. The fantastic tales that the townsfolk tell about the Ac-Taw, a clan of people who can shift into animals, are nothing but folklore. Or are they?Burke is stunned by his response to Rachel, and even more so when she innocently shows signs of possessing Ac-Taw blood. And this puts her in more danger than she knows, danger that only increases the urgency to mark her as his own.Rachel comes to realize she’s inherited much more than just property. She has also inherited a destiny to protect her newfound home. For the Ac-Taw aren’t just legend-they’re real....

This book made no sense. Seriously, no aspect of the world gelled for me. Rachel goes to some small town because her Aunt died. It turns out that the Aunt was the guardian of the mystical MacGuffin that keeps the town safe, and Rachel must find it. How? By "following her inner beast." Luckily for her, sexy cougar shifter Burke is able to take time away from his busy schedule of fighting with strangers and slut shaming his waitress to help her get freaky, inner-beast style. How this helped protect the town I have no idea. I read this book last night and I forgot already. I was really pumped that this was a free multiple partners book, but very confused as to how the animal scent marking thing (gross!) worked. Burke was very eager to keep Rachel to himself, but for some reason having his brothers gang bang her helped the initiation process? The book was careful to point out that it was only for hot women entering the back (male pack members have a different process.) As always, if a book says the dudes doing the gang banging are brothers, I pretend that they are just close friends for my own peace of mind. Also, for fellow horn dogs, I have to warn you that the scene fades to black just when it was getting good. Also, do cougars even have packs? I am an erotic romance review writer, not a biologist so who the hell knows, but it felt off. As far as shifter fics go, this makes The Keeping look like Shakespeare. However, it is really short and also free, so you don't need to take my word for it!

Rachel's aunt has just passed away and she has come to the small town where her aunt lived for the reading of the will. Turns out the town is populated my shape-shifters, only shape-shifters, and in order to even get into the town you have to have those genes too (the town is protected by a mystical totem). So Rachel shows up, not knowing about her heritage. Turns out her aunt was the keeper of the totem and since her death it has disappeared. Right off the bat she runs into Burke, a cougar-shifter and things heat up between them immediately. Apparently every time she is around him she starts going into heat. They have a very hot interlude in an alley, but then Rachel freaks out (she doesn't really know him so why this immediate draw? and she just came out of a very bad divorce). Both Burke and Rachel get letters from her aunt telling each of them that they were meant to be and that Burke is going to explain everything to Rachel. She kinda thinks he's crazy until he has one of his two brothers change into a cat in front of her. Surprisingly she is very accepting. Rachel is one of those rare shifters that can pick her animal and Burke wants her as a cougar, bad. The only way to guarantee that is to mark her by other cats. This is explained that it doesn't HAVE to be sexual. But of course the BEST and FASTEST way is by sex, and not just with him, but also with his brothers. But just that one time, because Burke is going to claim her as his mate. Eh. I was on board with it until there was a sudden 4-way. Because of course all THREE of them had to mark her fast-like? Homey don't play that.

2.5*Just a quick thought ---- I have nothing against group sex. It can be really great in a erotic stories if carried out right. And actually it was written quite good in this novella but the reasoning for it felt off considering how deep the connection between mates is supposed to be and there is other non-sexual way to mark members of the pride.

Really enjoyed this nice, quick read. Marie can really write a great paranormal story that just makes everything seem so plausible. Loved Rachel and Burke, Grady & Dean. I only wish, and this is selfish on my part, that the story were longer. Great read, some hot m/f/m/m action and a sweet story about second chances.

The only thing I didn't like was the instant love. The heat and sexual attraction was sizzling, but I hated how quickly they were throwing statements of love.

Just couldn't get into this book at all I and I usually love this authors work. The only reason I carried on with this series was I read a later book and really enjoyed so came back to read the series from the beginning. It is only the fact I know what happens later on that helped me understand and finish this book.

I started this book because i read the blurb an thought it would be a book i would really enjoy. I was pretty disappointed and a bit disgusted at the book.Rachel`s aunt has just passed away so she went to cougar falls to read her aunts will. she meets the sexy Burke who is the alpha of the cougar pack. He is a shifter and has two brothers. In a ally way she is involve in a street fight but is saved by Burke. They then have sex in the alley way. When she finds out she gets her aunts property she is delighted as she has an opportunity to start fresh. She also gets a letter from her aunt saying she should mate with Burke. Her aunt also tells her she is the guardian of the totem that protects the town. Burke then tells her that he is a shifter, make his brother shift and tells her about how she is a shifter and the pack want to mark her in to the pack. She refuses. A week later she agrees. This was the bit that kind of freaked me out. There is a menage scene between Rachel,Burke and his two brothers. I did not expect this and i never thought Burke would allow something like this because he is an alpha who does not want to share. The fact that it was with his brothers just freaked me out but it happened anyway. It happened MORE THAN ONCE. I MEAN DUDE, THAT IS YOUR MATE THEIR FUCKING. WHAT YOU GONNA DO, SIT THERE AND HELP!!!The ending was quick and confusing. ... I had no clue what was happening. It also felt rushed an unfinished.I don't want to put anyone of for reading the book. Read it anyway cause your opinions are different but this is my opinion of the book. I wasted my time reading a book i did not enjoy but i read it anyway so i can just finish with the book .

This book follows Rachel Penny, who has recently finished a very bitter divorce battle. Her favorite aunt dies and she has to go out to the small mountain town that her aunt lived in for the reading of the will. There she meets Burke Chastell, a tough mountain man. The two are instantly attracted to each other, though Rachel is unimpressed by his attitude when they first meet. Rachel soon learns that the whole town is made of shifters and she now holds a very important role for them.I would classify this book as much closer to erotica than romance. There's plenty of steamy scenes, including a foursome. Those parts were very good. However, the plot of the book was strongly underdeveloped. It started out all right, but about halfway through it felt like the author went, "Oh, this is taking too long. Let's jump to the good stuff". The end result is that the reason for the foursome winds up feeling flimsy and forced. Additionally the ending of the book was very rushed and didn't really match the build-up from the beginning of the book. If you don't mind flimsy plot with your sex scenes, you'll like this book. As for me, I like a stronger plot to advance the romance and just found it ok.

Rachel’s Totem was a great start to what I have come to know as a good series. Rachel, who has only visited her aunt in Cougar Falls several times in her long ago youth, thought her aunt was a few sandwiches short of a picnic. Her aunt was always telling her about shape shifters, but Rachel never believed a word. Now that her aunt has died, she comes to Cougar Falls to see if she can start a new life here. Recently divorced from her ex, she wants to make a new start. Why not do it in the place where her aunt loved so much? Who knew that when she stopped for breakfast that morning that she would get the surprise of her life. After a surprise in an alley, Rachel goes for the reading of her aunt's will, and finds even more surprises in store, and a quest that Rachel doesn't even know how to start or if she can trust her new partner in that quest. Rachel has met Burke, a hot catamount shifter, though Rachel doesn’t know or believe that. Her aunt’s stories are just stories right? I must say that I liked these two characters. They didn’t run over each other. They were both strong characters, and that is what I like most about this series.4. 5 stars.

Rachel Penny has inherited a house and a life in a small town from her favorite and only aunt. When she was little her aunt had told her wonderful fanciful stories about animal shape shifters and magic in the small town that she lived. Rachel always loved those stories.... until she finds out that they were real stories told to prepare her for her destiny...Burke is a man's man. I thought he was tough, hot and sexy, but much too possessive for me, but it doesn't matter what I think because he was made for Rachel. Burke is a catamount, a puma feline shape shifter as is his two brothers Dean and Grady. There is a light story about looking for the totem that protects the town from humans and dangerous shifters, but the real sexy story is about Rachel finding a home and a mate. There is some M/F sexy scenes as well as a crazy night where there is a M/M/M/F scene (Rachel and Burke and his brothers). There is lots of chemistry between H/h, but the italic conversations (mental shifter communications) was a bit annoying for the reading aspect because it isn't easy to read pages of italics.117 pages of fantasy shifter fun and kindle freebie2 stars

The small town of Cougar Falls, is inhabited with large, hot, mountain men. Every woman's dream..or every woman’s nightmare? For Rachel Penny, she’s not sure. She struts into town, unknowingly about the goings on in Cougar Falls. Her aunt passed away and she’s there to hear the reading of her will. Little does she know it’s more the reading of Rachel’s future and destiny than it is anything else. Her first encounter with Burke, doesn’t go well. She see’s him as an ass, like her ex. Now the second encounter goes much better, or at least much hotter. Hot alley sex with clothes on! Trust me just read it. Turns out Rachel is in heat. Is Burke up for the task? Will he claim her for his own or will someone else get to her first? Only way to find out is to pick up this little gem and start reading! This story had hot sex and a great storyline with enough twist and turns to keep you interested to the very end and this is just the beginning of the Cougar Falls series. I have a feeling there is much more animalistic heat to come!

I've read this book a couple times, mainly because I loved it so much. Everytime a new book in this series comes out, I start again from book 1. I loved this story because it takes place in an entire town of shifters. That's right, almost everyone is a shifter and you can't even find the town unless you are some how connected to it. Like Rachel, her aunt died and she's come to town for the reading of the will. Rachel doesn't realize it, but she's a special kind of shifter, like her aunt, she can choose which animal she turns into. Burke is the leader of his own pride and doesn't yet have a mate. Rachel's aunt was the keeper of the totem, which protects the town and helps keep outsiders out. Together, they must find the totem and find each other in the process. This book lays the foundation for the rest of the series and honestly I think it's one of my favorites. I would HIGHLY recommend it!!

Cougar Falls is in trouble - the Totem's Protector has died and the Totem has disappeared. The town's hope lies in the Protector's niece... who knows nothing about the paranormal world her aunt lived in.This story gives you a quick insight into how Rachel becomes the new Protector and thus gains four Protectors herself. There is some m/f/m/m action in this so if that puts you off then just don't bother reading it. As for myself, I copied Dean and Grady and thoroughly enjoyed it as it "was for one night only"! As this is a Novella, don't expect a book that gives the amount of description that Tolkein would! However, saying that, the amount of description given in this book is astounding - the town, the people, the rivalries, it's all there in your mind as you read through this little gem of a novella. If you want something that is short and spicy - and you don't mind a foursome - then definitely give this one a go. A good introduction to a new series for me to look out for.

Rachel's Totem was interesting. It is just a little over 100 pages so it is a light read you can sit down and finish in an hour or two. The story revolves around the Heroine Rachel and the Hero Burke. Rachel's Aunt Charlotte passes away and leaves all her belongings and property to Rachel in a town called Cougar Falls. Rachel a recent divorcee has a huge chip on her shoulder about men and can't figure out why she likes Burke so much. Cougar fall is special because it is a secret community of shifters that are shielded from the outside world by a ancient artifact called "the Totem". Rachel is the first outsider to come in a long time. Aunt Charlotte was the keeper of the Totem and it disappeared after she died. The town is in great trouble if they fail to find it. Aunt Charlotte leaves Rachel clues as to how to find the Totem. So the race begins for Rachel and Burke to find the Totem before the town is destroyed.

When I first read the synopsis of this book I was remembering a short story I read a few years ago and was kind of apprehensive, that it was going to play out exactly the same way. But in the end I was really glad I bought this story. The setting might have seemed the same, but everything else was really different. The dialogue was great, the storytelling interesting and the characters charming. I also loved the main idea about an object being able to protect, when the person responsible for it is in tune with herself.I really recommend this story __ but I must warn about the implied foursome (the 3 brothers with her). It__s mostly hinted at and the real action is mostly a threesome with a watcher, but still. ;-)

When I picked this up I had high hopes but once again I was let done. Personally it was because of the sex. Too intense and way too soon. I understand that PNR/UF romance-ish books tend to be primarily on this but it is getting rather tiring. I want more than fictional relationships borne from lust, which is the reason why I've scored it so low. Not to mention the polygamous situation the two MC's found themselves in. It totally contradicted the claim early in the book that Catamount Cougars prefer a life of solidarity and do not share their partner.But...This won't stop me from possibly reading its follow up In Plain Sight

✰✰✰Rachel returns to Cougar Falls to lick her wounds and find out what the recent death of her aunt means for her. Right off the bat, she meets and has a clothed public sexual encounter with Burke, her neighbor and hottie. Rachel is feeling a little out-of-sorts, perhaps she needs to embrace the inner beast she didn't even know she had. Of course, Burke's her mate and there's a hot menage with his brothers to bring her into the fold. In between this all, Rachel and Burke must search for the Totem that protects the town and Aunt Charlotte guarded which has been missing since her death and it looks like Rachel is the new Guardian.

Thought this would have lots of action but the only action worthy of my attention was the one between the sheets. Can't say I didn't like reading that foursome although I didn't exactly understood the need to have one for her to be marked and shift. Kind of got my hopes up for a relationship between them all...what can I say? I thrive on weird. I did nevertheless liked seeing her with Burke. They were sweet even despite all those alpha pheromones making him act all possessive and jealous which I wasn't very fond of. Overall it was enjoyable but not much to look at.

So I got this series assuming it was a normal romance about shifters. Apparently I missed where it said it was erotica. There was some pretty hot M/F scenes which I had no problem with, it was when it came to the M/M/M/F scene that I had issues. I was pretty disappointed considering they stated it didn't have to be sexual and yet the main male character makes the hard decision to let his brothers have sex with the love of his life aka his mate! Just really, really hard to find a good romance novel, all these authors adding erotics where it's not needed.

Another in the multiple-partners genre, overall I liked it. Once again, we have brothers sharing a woman, although it was all for a good cause this time. Rachel is in Cougar Falls to hear her Aunt's will. She soon learns that the town is a hotbed of shapeshifter activity and she's the Guardian of the mystical power that keeps the town safe from human eyes. Throw in a sexy shapeshifting rancher and you have the recipe for hot cougar loving.

The story was pretty good but I just didn't like the whole foursome thing! Ewwww.....I wish that hadn't happened between Rachel and Burke and his brothers. It would have made the story a lot sweeter and loving. Other than that minor concern I loved it. I was happy that in the end she picked Burke and only Burke to be her mate! ;)

A fun spicy paranormal novella. Rachel has no idea the Ac-Taw of her aunt's stories are real. Then she arrives for the reading of her aunt's will, has a hot encounter with Burke, learns she's inherited Charlotte's house and a mysterious destiny (and Burke is her new neighbor), and gets proof the Ac-Taw are real and need her help.

Grady groaned, and Burke couldn’t help fisting his own cock as he watched his brothers fuck his mate This was a little strange, because if you love someone how can you leave her with your brothers and even participate with them.Despite this I enjoyed the book. I'm starting to really like the cougars.

Okay so the blurb had me intrigued and I liked it at first, but then they blindsided me (view spoiler)[with a menage a quatre. I mean to each their own, but a woman having sex with a guy and his two brothers makes me uncomfortable, and I would have liked a warning. So here's the warning for those of you who, like me, don't think menage is your cup of tea. (hide spoiler)]

2.5 stars. I did not realize this was going to become an orgy of sorts, 3 brothers and 1 female. The covers or book description usually warn you of this. I am not really OK with the concept even if they say it was a one time necessary deal and she ends up as mates with one... They declared fidelity to each other, so when the other brothers find a mate - it won't be necessary after all?!?

I gave this a 3 star because damn, the sex was hot, and I loved the hero. The heroine... she grew on me after a while, mainly because she was honest with herself and others.I almost didn't get beyond the first chapter because it started off with 1) slut shaming, and 2) male sexual harassment denial, but luckily those things faded into the background pretty fast.
