Civil Liberties Reviews
Wow, this is an old short novella. I really enjoyed the romance in it. Truthfully said, Denny was a hard selfish guy, but with Christian, he began to change. I really enjoyed how Denny's priorities changed from work, one-night stands to letting himself love Christian. I loved how Christian accepted Denny with his faults and possessiveness. It was a bit to mushy, but sometimes we need such feelings too.
Christian is a NYPD cop in the closet. Since he is a military brat and plus a cop, he doesn't feel to be open about his homosexuality at work, and so, in his mid twenty, he is still a "virgin" with men. But lately he saw a man that could make he change his mind on remaining chaste.Denny sees Christian in a local gay club. He is intrigued by the shyness of the man, who dares only to meet his eyes and nothing more. Denny is a past forty District Attorney, and also him should maintain a low profile about his sexual preferences, and plus he is a bit of a don juan, always having relationships without string attached. And so when he sees the chance to debauch young Christian, he jumps to the possibility, without worry to much of the consequences. And the consequences are that Christian is in love with Denny, his first love and first man. And when Denny leaves the morning after with the promise to call, he believes him. Only that Denny has no intention to maintain his promise. And probably he would never see again Christian, if he didn't find the man in front of him as witness in one of his cases. Now Denny has to decide if leaving alone the man, and hoping that with time he will recover from his heartbroken, or if pursuing this relationship. As Christian say, it's all up to Denny. The story is not very long, less than 90 pages, but I like it. I like Christian, he is sweet and sincere, open with his feeling and so easy to be wound. He is a cop but he has no problem to admit that outside his work, he likes a commanding man, someone he could give up the hand. Christian is a good boy, from a conservative family; he is full of doubts, he doesn't want people around him to suffer for his decisions, but he is "straight" to them, he doesn't deny his true nature.Denny is not a nice character at first. He is selfish and also a liar. And even if later he behaves a bit better, he is still very selfish: he considers to have a steady relationship with Christian, but at his own term. Actually who has to change all his life is Christian, Denny only considers to slightly accommodate his time to include Christian. He is only lucky that Christian seems to like and need a man like him, otherwise this relationship will have a very short life...http://elisa-rolle.livejournal.com/30...
3.5 starsSome parts are emotional/angsty enough and I pretty enjoyed it.
