The Things They Do to You Reviews
Nino getting an enema... book is a lot funnier than that makes it sound ;)
It's been several years ago, was living in Austrailia at the time approx 1977, the funniest book I had ever read up to that time (not sure it has been beat yet). To give the author credit he has a very descriptive way of telling a tale not like other authors more like someone spinning a yarn to his mates at the bar...but in book form. Only a cold-hearted meanie won't have sympathy for the main character's predicament even while laughing their backside off.
Anyone who thinks the internet is not wonderful is a moron. Some years ago I found a second-hand bookshop with many an O'Grady title, but his stuff has been out of print a long time and such stashes are rare.Or at least they are in the physical world.A Google search turned up Bookpound, which had the above title in stock. The internet might be killing books, but it's also making old books much easier to find. The Things They Do to You is neither O'Grady's best nor his worst book. It's essentially non-fiction, with some names changed, and details his experiences in the army's medical corps and a stay in hospital where doctors spent a lot of time sticking instruments where the sun don't shine. It does have its laugh-out-loud moments, but I think my favourite thing about this book is the way O'Grady manipulates language to skate around the graphic descriptions necessary to explain colonoscopies and similar procedures. It also makes rather disturbing reading for a Gen-Xer - and it gives me great relief I wasn't born 50 years earlier.
