Annabelle's Wish (Little Golden Book) Reviews
Korman, S (1997). AnnaBelle's Wish. New York: Golden Books.Illustrated by Alan Nowell and AssociatesAdapted by Susan Korman from the animated film Annabelle's Wish and based on a short story by Dan Henderson.Annabelle's Wish is about a calf born on Christmas Eve, where she meets Santa Clause, who gives the barn animals the ability to talk for a day. Annabelle sees Santa's reindeer and has the dream to fly, and hopes to tell Santa of her wish the next time he comes. Meanwhile, Annabelle becomes friends with a little boy named Billy who lives on the farm, who cannot talk after a scary fire. Annabelle and Billy become very close, but Billy's Aunt Agnes has come to take him away from the city on Christmas Eve. That night, when Santa comes, instead of asking Santa if she can fly, she gives her "Christmas voice" to BIlly so he can speak. After many years pass, Santa grants Annabelle's wish by turning her into a reindeer in honor of her good deed to Billy. As a child Annabelle's Wish was one of my favorite movies at Christmas time, and in fact still is. So, I was very excited when I found the book. However, the book did not live up to the movie, which in all of my previous experiences is the opposite; the book is much better than the movie! The pictures in the book are from the movie, and while the book is well written, it did not seem to capture other important characters from the movie, and did not leave me with the satisfied feeling that usually comes to me after finishing a book. The book is a great read for kids, but to me it was "tainted" by my having seen the movie.
Summary:A calf is born on Christmas Day and is named Annabelle. She is given to the younger boy Billy. Billy hasn't talked or been in the barn ever since a fire a long time ago. But once he meets Annabelle he is in the barn everyday! Annabelle has the lifelong wish of flying and decides that next Christmas she will wish to fly like Santa’s reindeer. Well a day before Christmas Billy's aunt comes and says tomorrow she will take Billy with her to stay in the city because she is sure that Billy will talk with her there. Annabelle has a decision for a wish. She has always wanted to fly but she would never get to see Billy again. She has a huge decision to make.Connections:I see that the fantasy rules were established right away. That is that Chapter ten had said was very important to establish. The rule that is very well established is: every Christmas Santa comes and gives the animals the ability to speak for that day.
i absolutely love love love this book along with the movie that was made. i watched this every year a a child around christmas time and would read it multiple times before bed. I can't wait to show my kids and share the passion i had for this book so long ago.
My daughter's name is Annabelle, so I had to buy this book even though it's the cow in the book with the same name. It's a touching story with a good moral of being selfless.
Read it every year becuase I'm such a toddeler! :P
I hate to ever have to say this - but the movie is much better!
