All Night Long Reviews
Historical fiction set in USSR during the Nazi Germany invasion. Strong descriptions of fighting behind the front lines between the German Army and the Russian resistance. Less in depth development of characters than in some of his other works. More of a general novel of the good and evil done by mankind in a war to the death. This is a war novel including violent killing. I have read it several time over the years. It is one of those books, I expect you will either love or hate.
3.5Caldwell is straight forward in his story telling, never flashy. His novels are interesting and page turners. Of Tobacco Road is about ignorance then this is s concentration on the horrors of the occupation of Russia and guerrilla warfare. Painful at parts but compelling. Caldwell writes do that anyone can access his writing and understand the social themes that most concern him.
I think mr.Caldwell should have stayed in the united states. I was lost in the work, Did not get a single character . very disappointed .
