A fairly comprehensive biography, divided into sections focused on different phases of Gershwin's work -- Tin Pan Alley, concert music, musicals, Porgy and Bess, etc. While I appreciated the focus on his music, the writing style is a bit dry and the frequent references to previous Gershwin biographies sometimes gave me the sense that the purpose of the book was to react to those books rather than provide a new take on Gershwin himself. On the other hand, the chapter which specifically covers what other biographies have been written, what they each focused on, and whether they were sympathetic or critical makes a good bibliography.Though I had a little trouble getting through the book, I was left with an appreciation of Gershwin's accomplishments in his too-short life, and the complexity of his personality.
