Das wahre Leben des Domingos Xavier. Erzählungen aus Angola Reviews
Originally written in Portuguese, this novella by Jose Luandino captures the brutalities the Angolans suffered during the Portuguese masters' 'siege' of the Southern African nation. Luandino takes us back to the dystopian state of the nation during those years through Domingos, a tractor driver who succumbs to colonial cruelty. He dies at the hands of the 'policia' and in his death goes with the secrets the oppressors so much wanted. Luandino in this work succeeds strongly in trying to mirror the unity and courage the Angolan nationalists had which also explains Xavier's determination and oath to shut his mouth until his death. Old Petelo, Zito, Francisco John, Maria, The hunchbacked tailor, are all concerned for Domingos. The difficult times notwithstanding, they still hold dances on Saturday nights to celebrate their being, as 'blacks'Through his fusion of Kimbundu and Portuguese, Luandino does well to contextualize this work. It is indeed a good read
My ninth book for #bannedbooksweek this year.
