This tells the story of Bluey and Ellen, who grew up in Goondiwindi on the border of NSW and Queensland, Australia, in the lead up to World War II. Bluey enlists while Ellen stays on the farm with his parents. What happens to Bluey changes their lives forever. This is not great literature, but it is a good read with a dash of history. It gives a picture of the impacts of the war on the people left at home and their subsequent lives.

Something intrigued me, or should I say troubled me as I read this story. I found it interesting and at times engrossing despite the very mundane nature of the narrative. I wondered why until I figured out that it lacked adjectives. A good story was told without much flavour. The characters also seemed a little one dimensional as well, but as I said, I liked it.
