Fast Company Reviews
MGM bought the book, and no wonder since it has the snappy dialogue of The Thin Man series. For an added twist, it is set in the arcane world of book collecting. First published in 1938, it is a fun period caper. Page was the pseudonym for Harry Kurnitz, who went on to write screenplays (e.g. Witness for the Prosecution) and plays for theatre. And, according to IMDB, he's got writing credit a couple of the Thin Man sequels.
The plot's nothing groundbreaking, but the relationship between detective/book dealer Joel Glass and his wife, Garda, is a lot of fun. Nothing grounbreaking, either -- they're definitely modeled on Nick & Nora Charles -- but completely pleasurable to be around.
Just started the book so I haven't really 'learned' anything... but I found this web site while searching for a cover photo:http://www.coverbrowser.com/If you're a book nerd & cover art fan like me, this is truly an awesome discovery. Possibly even better than the book itself, which reads like a black and white movie.
Another bibliomystery from this same period, which also was turned into a film and has a plot that revolves around stolen first editions, was Fast Company (1937) by Marco Page (pseudonym of Henry Kuritz.
A decent, snappy patter between a married couple in the 30's mystery. Yes, it is much like a Thin Man movie, and that's just fine with me. Plenty of scotch and soda, cigarettes, and smart dames that think they know how to handle a man.
