I was eighteen and gay and working on prom night, a Cinderella without a prince, when a vision appeared in the coffee aisle: He was wearing a short, black skirt, a pale cream shirt that exposed his bare midriff, and upon his feet were a pair of very pink, very high stiletto heels. And he was my very own high school wet dream, Rob Marshall! Whodathunkit?...

This book is only 34 pages but one of the best short stories I've read all year. Starts off with Michael's daughter brining down a pink shoe and asking him why he kept it. The story flashes back from Michael's POV during high school where he was struggling with the fact that he was gay. A new boy arrived in class, Rob, his first real life boy crush. After loving him from afar, prom night arrives and he is busy working in the grocery aisle. Interrupted by a co-worker who informed him that some odd young man was in a skirt and pink stilettos, Michael’s life changes when he walks down the coffee aisle to find out who it is. I won't go into further detail because I would spoil the story but this is a spectacularly well written short story. Quote:Okay, first things first. He was wearing a skirt-black and short-beneath which his long bare legs could be seen, smooth and muscled, and very shapely. The skirt accentuated the fact that he had a very cute ass, as well. The shirt he worde was a pale cream color and bare midriff, so that I could see that his stomach was indeed flat. And upon his feet were a pair of very pin, very high stiletto heels. He must have heart me, for he turned his head.....and oh my God,......

Short and sweet. Short, but sweet. Something like that.I like that though it's short, you get a sense of the history behind it all. It's not perfect, but it's rather well-written.

Sometimes a smell, a sound, a taste, or an object can drag up memories… the smell of lilacs drags me back to my old room. In summer time, the window would be wide open; I’m getting ready for bed, the smell of lilacs from the tree outside my bedroom window permeating the room. Whenever I see daisies, I remember the birthday cake my mom baked one year, decorated with fresh daisies. In Michael’s case, a pair of pink stilettos drags him back to when he was just a teenager. What follows is the story of how Michael met … oh, you’ll just need to read it yourself to find out.I usually don’t read short stories; I prefer full-length novels as they allow me to get to know the characters better. However, the title of this story grabbed me. Its hooks firmly embedded in my brain, I started reading and didn’t stop until the final sentence in the last paragraph was concluded. And I enjoyed every minute of it.Although Michael –whose memories we relive– is very much an adult, the bulk of the story is set when he is 18 and I think that adults (be they ‘young’, ‘new’, or otherwise) will enjoy this story indiscriminately. The Prince Wore Pink Stilettos, by Julie Lynn Hayes, might not be the most challenging read you will ever find but it is a very sweet love story and I would urge you to get your copy. As a matter of fact, if this story doesn’t cause a chuckle to fall from your lips and doesn’t bring a tear to your eyes, I will personally refund your purchase. It really is that impactful. I just wish it was longer, much longer, because I want to know what happened after…

Reviewed for Hearts On Fire Reviews - 5 heartsThis story is all about a young man discovering his sexuality (only to realize it’s different than everyone around him) and the wonders of young love – that first crush, that first kiss, and that first awkward foray into achieving sexual satisfaction with another person. It truly felt almost like a fairytale in the making… almost. Substitute a pair of pink stilettos for the glass slippers, a mini skirt for the gown, a grocery store for the ball, and oh yeah, a guy instead of a girl and voila, you have it. The story is told as mostly a trip down memory lane, but when it returns to current time, it’ll leave you with a little surprise sure to warm your heart. Loved it!

This is one of those stories that, while it is short, is the perfect length. It is sweet, funny and most of all, it's romantic. Michael's daughter, Amber, is digging around in the attic and comes down with, yep, the pink stiletto. The sight of it sends Michael down memory lane, to his first love, who was his first kiss, who he gave his virginity too, on a prom night that he didn't attend. Seeing his crush at the grocery store where Michael was working, dressed in a mini skirt and those pink stilettos, and showing interest in him, just adorable. It's a story of looking back, and it was tender and lovely.

3.5*Cute short story! First crush and first love..and a cool opening scene. I just wish I had a little more about their relationship, but it was sweet and a nice in-between read, but I sure would like to know if Rob knew Michael was going to be at the store before he went in with his pink stilettos!

I liked this story a lot. It's short, sweet and has a nice (if somewhat expected and definitely hoped for) twist at the end. It relates Michael's first experience with another boy on the night of their senior prom, which neither of them attend due to their sexual preference. It is a very tender story and well written.

This was a cute story of first love! I read it quickly, because it flowed so nicely. I could picture things happening just as described. I knew the ending already, but watching it develop was nicely written! Nice job, Julie!

4 StarsWhat a delightful little coming of age short story...even if there weren't any manties under that short skirt! (I do have to say that the timing of these events seems a little off; that get-up Rob wears sounds more like something from the 80s or 90s instead of the 70s but it's a minor quibble. I'm also not sure how well cross-dressing would have been received in a small town, either...but it IS the era of Glam Rock and Ziggy Stardust is pretty huge so, maybe?)
