[These notes were made in 1989:]. A "cheap" edition, combining four of Sayers' plays: The Devil to Pay, The Just Vengeance, He That Should Come, and The Zeal of Thy House, which seems a highly substantial crop for 4/6! Of the four, The Just Vengeance, an occasional piece for Lichfield Cathedral, left the least impression, although its premise - that it all takes place during the moment of an airman's death - is striking enough. The surreal jumping from character and situation to other character or situation is unsuited to the page, but may have been rather effective in the flesh. He That Should Come is a stage adaptation of the first of the Man Born... radio plays, and Sayers explains the technical changes in a concise and interesting preface. The Zeal of Thy House, a play about William of Sens, who built Canterbury Cathedral, is an interesting play about the pride of making. And The Devil To Pay, as one might expect, is the Faust story, but with a fascinating cake-and-eat-it ending; Faust is dragged off to Hell by Mephistopheles, but triumphantly in the hope of a glorious resurrection at the last trump. How doctrinally sound this is I would not even venture to guess but it makes a good ending.
