---The books are starting to seem a bit repetitive. Hiccup and Fishlegs get bullied in the beginning, manage to mess up their lessons and land somewhere completely different, encounter something/someone, get back but nobody believes them then save the day/themselves.---It still made me LOL a lot so there's that.---We meet Astrid's book counterpart called "Camicazi". Instead of the Hairy Hooligans, she belongs to the Bog-Burglar tribe of women and is their heir. She is tiny but ferocious.---The Vikings clash with Romans. Hilarity ensues.---Alvin the Treacherous returns.---The Dragonese bits were my favorite. They were really, really funny.ENGLISH-----------DRAGONESE laugh-------------(do di chuckli ha-has)legs hurting------------(ow-indi-tootsies)kiss--------------(swappa da yucki lip-juice)night---------------(zuzztime)no problem--------------(easipeasilemonsqueezi)to lose your temper------------(do di screemiberserkers)wind----------------(thorpuff)bite someone on the bottom------------(yum-yum on di bum)farts--------------------(buttok-thunder)enemies---------------(piss people)human beings------------(da wingless land prisoners no-brainers)

This series remains quirky and fun, a good break from doing reading for my dissertation. Hiccup and Toothless are the perfect characters to root for: underdogs who nevertheless come out on top. Still, there isn't much by way of character development and so on, so older readers might start to find themselves a little bored. I think I'll give it a good long break before I read another one, since they are charming and fun -- just very definitely aimed at kids.

It's only been about a week since I read this, but I cannot remember much of it. I have tried reading four books of the How to Train Your Dragon series, but sadly we are not compatible. I prefer my fiction to be even vaguely historically accurate: you may think that defeats the point of it being fiction but I disagree rather strongly. The books are relatively harmless, I suppose, though the genders stereotypes are rather a bore until Kamakaze turns up. She should have far more page time than any of the stupid Vikings. I think the fact that Vikings never wore horny helmets is getting to me more than it should. There is attempted humour but I find it incredibly lacking. There are funnier children's books out there that have more charm than this, more adventure and better characters in general. Also, is anyone just utterly disappointed with Toothless and find him annoying to the point of wanting the wee little shite to just die? Just me?

A good volume, light in adventure but full of hungry Romans and dangerous dragons. And there's finally a girl!Hiccup continues his training and, as usual, everything doesn't go well. While trying to board an harmless ship with Fishlegs and their two useless dragons, they end in front of a small Roman army. The previous volume was disappointing, so I was pleased to enjoy this one a lot more. A few things happened but as usual Hiccup had some smart ideas, helping to save the day. There were several new species of dragons in the spotlight, which was nice and, more entertaining, there was a girl (a nasty little strong one!). I liked how Hiccup used his language skills, the humor when someone else tried to speak dragonese (without success), the evolution of the relationship between the boy and his father and the nice change of scenery with the Romans (a romanced one of course).

It was such a fun reading. Especially because while I was reading the book I was listening the audiobook with David Tennant's(Killgrave/Doctor Who) voice! He is an incredible actor and I loved the way he changed his voices with so many characters, it was the perfect sound for his story! I recommend for you to listen this story through his voice.

I made the scurrilous comment that the first of these was for overly young children - however, they have entertained me and I am still reading them! I particularly like Toothless and Stoick the Vast :)

I was expecting more from these books. I was expecting Harry Potter or Percy Jackson caliber. I had watched the movies first and I'm sorry to say, at least so far, I think the movies are much better. I'm going to continue with the series though, so maybe this opinion will change.

"However small we are, we should always fight for what we believe to be right. And I don't mean fight with the power of our fists or the power of our swords. That has always been the problem with us Vikings. I mean the power of our brains and our thoughts and our dreams."This book has a really good message, and the other ones have had the same. Hiccup lives in a world where you can only gain respect by being strong and uber masculine, but his other qualities are what saves him and the others constantly. I like the way this book shows this message, and how the Vikings slowly understand and listen to Hiccup. I also love how his relationship with Toothless has developed through these first few books. It felt really natural and heartwarming.

"How to speak Dragonese" (How#3) by Cressida Cowell is the 2* journal vocab translations and dragon descriptions, kept by Hiccup, 11, scrawny freckled red-haired son, of the Hairy Hooligan tribe chief, on the Isle of Berk with "28 words for rain" p76. Half is torn away by the Thin Prefect, formerly Alvin the Treacherous Outcast leader, now advisor to the Fat Consul, when Hiccup, his tiny annoying green dragon "Useless" Toothless, and pal Fishlegs "daddy longlegs with asthma and a squint" p19 argue with 10 other student lads, especially boastful oaf Snoutlout, and end up on a Roman ship during Gobber the Belch's lesson, "Boarding an enemy ship". Their souvenir proof is a Roman helmet instead of a Peaceable fisherman cap. Website http://www.howtotrainyourdragonbooks.comCons: Amid more annoying arguments (demote 1*) Ziggerastica, "Living God, Most High and Mighty Ruler of the Nano Empire, Despot of the Northern Grasses, Great Sourge of the Bracken Dwellers" p93 promises to save the weak duo in the future, as thanks for his own rescue. Stoick the Vast is unconvinced that Hiccup correctly overheard Romans plot to also kidnap the daughter of Big-Boobied Bertha, head of female Viking Bog-Burglar clan. The centurions in disguises will cause the clans to mistakenly blame each other. Deduct 1* because imprisoned Hiccup waits whining for his misled father, and criticizes plans of Master Escaper heir petite tangle-blonde Camicazi.Pro: Add 1* for closing paraquote "However small we are, we should always fight for what we believe to be right, not with fists or swords, but brains, thoughts, and dreams. However small, quiet, and unimportant our fighting may look, together we may break out of the prisons of our own making" p235. The winning plan depends on "numberless armies" of microscopic nanodragons. I like moral, not arguing, whining. 3-1-1+1=2*

This novel was different in that it focused not just on Viking customs but Roman ones as well. I enjoyed the different characters and how our hero interacted with them. The story line flowed well and it came to a nice full circle at the end which I liked. I am really enjoying the epilogues that old Hiccup writes, it makes me feel more connected with his character. Also at the end of the book there is always a slight tease to what happens in the next book and this tease has made me very excited to read the next novel. Overall, a good continuation to the story of How to Train Your Dragon.

#36 - When in the car my charge and I have been listening to the 12-book series by the author of How To Train Your Dragon. The audiobooks are read by the wonderful David Tennant of Dr. Who fans. If there's any problem with the books it's that they are too funny and we sometimes have to pause and rewind a few seconds. Very clever and creative#36 = How to Speak Dragonese #37 = How to Cheat A Dragon's Curseboth by Cressida Cowell

Termasuk ayahnya sendiri. How to be a Puirate).

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is one of my favourite character's in this series! He's an unlikely hero who is one his way to being one. I always feel sorry for Hiccup and I'm always rooting for him and I love to read about his out-of-the-box ideas that are heavily influenced by his imagination, and I like to see how his plans will work out in the end. Hiccup shines when he's stuck in a dangerous situations and has to find away out for himself, family and his friends. He is able to understand and can speak Dragonese, the language of the dragons which is so cool. I do love that his dad, Stoick, shows his real feeling towards his son when it really counts - you know that he loves Hiccup very much even if he finds it difficult to express his 'softer' side.I enjoy that all the characters are unique and by just reading the dialogue you would know who is talking just by how the person speaks as well as how they structure their sentences. I love Toothless's stutter/lisp its so cute and an unique character trait/personality quirk. He's a green Common/Garden Dragon hunting-dragon. I love Toothless's back talk and sass as well as his laziness - oh you Toothless you can fly, your wings aren't that heavy you lazy bones. I do love that the only person he will shed his laziness and fear is for Hiccup. Fishlegs is such a sensible, rationale and such a sassy character. He is Hiccup's best friend and he supports his friends until the end even if he believes they are crazy or its not going to work - but he does it anyway. He is seen as a wimp like Hiccup, but he has shown himself to be quite cunning when he needs to be as well as fearless when he can pull his wits together. And his 'barbarian rage' is awesome and I like it when he stands up to the bully's for his friend. And here comes Camicazi, the best character ever as well as a true pirate in the flesh! I love he energy and her fast talking as she fights with extreme enthusiasm! Camicazi is a chatty, fierce and an amazing and fun sword fighter from the tribe of female warriors known as the Bog-Burglars. She's very skilled at escaping and burglary. She rushes into dangerous situation without thinking, even more when it comes to her family and friends. Camicazi is always brave and cheerful. I love her personality and fearlessness as well as her 'come at me if you think your hard enough, I'll take you with one hand behind my back', and she would and win!!! It never a good thing to be kidnapped but its worse to be kidnapped by the Romans who has teamed up with Alvin. So its time to escape!! :D

WOW! This book was awesome!!Now kids... the reason I put a SPOILER ALERT on this review is because I just must must must compare it to the movie. I know this is the 3rd book in the series... but you know ;) I saw differences.First off.... Toothless in the book is a tiny green dragon that fits inside Hiccup's shirt pocket, is known a a garden or common dragon, and really is toothless :)In the movie .... Toothess is a black dragon, can't fit inside your pocket, is known as a night fury, has a hurt tail that he does not like to be touched (oh yeah... I noticed lolz), and does have teeth (but they only come down when he wants them to)Hiccup on the other hand is just like he is in the movie but he has learned the secret language of the dragons. He knows how to speak -- wait for it --- dragonese. He;s like the Ceasar Millan of Dragons.Oh wait!! One thing that Hiccup doesn't have in the book that he has in the movie is a prosthetic leg. I was mighty curious about that. My son is an amputtee and I really thought it was soooo awesome the way they ended the movie. Oh wells... either way... I am mighty pleased with them both ;) (Book and movie) I mean it's not like they went all My Sister's Keeper on the characters . (Kids... any of you read the book then watched the movie? I seriously got my money back lolz! I kid you not)In this book I learned such words as Burp, Fart, Poo, Bite someone's finger, have a tantrum, and loads more of useful words that could help me in any dragon situationHere's some Dragonese:crappa cack cack - POOyum-yum on di bum - TO BITE SOMEONE ON THE BOTTOMmunchy-holder - TABLEdo di wobbly screamers- TO HAVE A TANTRUMpiss-people - ENEMY (hahs! I thought that was funny)Me eaty di miaowlaI want to eat the catThe humor in this book is sooo perfect for a boy! I can seriously see any boy from the age of 5 to 14 adoring this book. But just warn them that Toothless is a bit different.OH! And the illustrations in this book are fabulous!! Sure they look like a 12 year old drew them (you can even see pencil erasings) but that's what makes them so wonderful because you are supposed to believe that Hiccup drew them. I loved them!!All and all... this may not be as good as Captain Underpants but it sure is a great weekend read and I'm ever so happy they made a movie about it.Team Toothless!!

These books are extremely entertaining. There’s appeal here for both kids and adults alike. Children will be fascinated by Hiccup’s exploits: his Viking training sessions, his interactions with dragons of all shapes and sizes, his marvelous ability to outsmart smarmy characters. Adults will enjoy these aspects, too, but may be even more impressed with the emphasis on brains vs. brawn, Hiccup’s determination to be his own person, and the main characters’ willingness to work as a team when it matters. Add to all of these qualities a healthy dose of easy humor and Cowell’s series is excellent so far. How to Speak Dragonese ends with a charming epilogue from the point of view of the present-day Hiccup. This may have been my favorite part of the book, though I’m not sure how it will go over with the kiddies since it’s more adult in tone. It’s a moment of reflection and summary that reminds us of the important things:"However small we are, we should always fight for what we believe to be right. And I don’t mean fight with the power of our fists or the power of our swords…I mean the power of our brains and our thoughts and our dreams. And as small and quiet and unimportant as our fighting may look, perhaps we might all work together…and break out of the prisons of our own making. Perhaps we might be able to keep this fierce and beautiful world of ours as free for all of us as it seemed to be on that blue afternoon of my childhood."

Oct 19, 2010: I am not holding out much hope. This will likely be the very last How to Train Your Dragon book to enter my home. I am only reading it because someone I love has asked me to read books 1 through 3. Almost done.Nov 13, 2010 update: I have finished this awful book. I do not understand how it has been given so many stars by so many people. The only chapter that reveals potential writing talent is the final one. The author also included a shock factor that young boys will likely think hilarious but parents need to think twice about. Why else name a character, "Big-Boobied Bertha?" I mean, the woman also has a big beard. Why not name her Big-Bearded Bertha? The kids would still get a kick out of the name and the line between appropriate and inappropriate would not have been crossed. A line from the book, "These bosoms have killed before and they will kill again," was prophetic. These bosoms and their story have killed my desire to read any further in this series or to have my child journey forth on their pages either.

Another bag of laugh from Hiccup’s adventuresThese nutzos from Hairy Hooligans Tribe keep me laughing all the time.10 anak bangsa Viking yang masuk dalam Program Pelatihan Bajak Laut. Baca aja lah, dijamin ketawa-ketiwi.. Apalagi kalo liat ilustrasinya yang anak TK bangeeeet. Hahaha.Tittak krauk-krauk allas bokkong, tittak bolle krauk-krauk shi miaw-miawByur-byur di pattpatt, Muah-muah yakkih! (bahasa naga tuh!) Hehehe...

The next book of Hiccup's adventures (a bday present from Jon). As always a really fun read! Poor old Hiccup. In this one he is kidnapped by the Romans and has to try and escape (along with Fishlegs and new character Camicaze, from a rival tribe). A bit of mild peril but again lots of laugh out loud bits, and I still love the drawings! Adorable <3 Can't wait to read the next one! Only downside is that my copy has a very exciting ":O in the next book..." that someone in the confusion was stung by the Venomous Vorpent "and, as everybody knows, the sting of the Venomous Vorpent is absolutely always fatal... Which of our Heroes was unlucky enough to be stung? Look out for the next volume of Hiccup's memoirs..." and the next few pages advertise the previous two books and the next one in the series (How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse)... and reveals the plot and who was stung. OH OK THANKS FOR RUINING THE SUSPENSE. ._.

I read this with my 8-year-old son and right away ordered all the other Hiccup books from the library. The characters are likeable, the situations are funny, the stories are exciting, and the illustrations are fun. Maybe this one is my fave of the series because we read it first, or maybe it's genuinely the best. Either way, the Hiccup books are great fun for adventure-loving kids. They're geared to 8-10-year-olds, who can read them alone, but they're fun to read aloud, too. The language is very chatty ("really quite"s unfortunately abound) and it's easy to grow attached to the characters. The movie, How to Train Your Dragon, was very sweet but had little to do with the book, other than the character of Hiccup, the hero. I'm glad that its success has brought more readers to the series.

The accidental heroes, the misfit vikings Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and his lazy good-for-nothing dragon toothless are back with a new adventure. This time they are kidnapped by Romans who have a very cunning plan of three lines to conquer the Vikings.*****Absolute blast, a boost to both mind and spirit, this part has new adventures with some new very interesting characters which leave a distinct imprint in the memory. Out of which Camicazi is the most prominent one. Heir to the bog-burglar tribe, daughter of big-boobied bertha, Camicazi is a unusually small girl with a very feisty and flippant attitude. Another noticeable character is the tiny weeny dragon ziggerastic. The story ends with a note of high morale unexpected in such a silly story and a sting (literally).
