Wow wow wow. Volume two and it's way more intense than the anime ever was. Dope

I'm really enjoying this weird, randomly-embarked-upon trip down Middle School Memory Lane. I think I actually like this series better now than I did back then.

Woo! Everyone's favorite bad-tempered ghost is back in part two! Yusuke Yurameshi is a high school boy who often skips going to school, gets into fights with every bully in the city, and has a reputation of being the baddest thug around, when one day, a selfless act of saving a kid from getting turned into a road-pancake leaves Yusuke as a ghost! He's been put to some tests to come back to life since the Afterlife doesn't know what else to do with him, having no place prepared for him when he died, but it's not going to be easy! Time's starting to run out, and Yusuke's out of options if he messes this last chance up badly! Will he finally come back to life or will he be doomed to remain a ghost forever?! GASP AND SHOCK!I'm so tempted to quote the TV show now. XD 'Next time, on Yu*Yu*Hakusho!'

Volume Two features more ghostly hi-jinks as Yusuke meets Sayaka, a lonely ghost, two friends competing over entrance exams, and his old acquaintance Matsuo (whom Yusuke extorted money from). Yusuke's not-so-bad side is more fully developed during these chapters and this more well-rounded view of him gives reason for his friendship with Keiko. Many of these short story arcs are feel-good and end (mostly) harmlessly, and at the end, Yusuke returns to life.Though drawn in 1990, I didn't find the artwork to be particularly dated, though certain differences exist in the style. The translation was good and the plot is interesting, though many of the important events are down-to-wire cliffhangers (of course). This volume ends the ghost-Yusuke arc and with it, the plot will experience a dramatic change in subsequent volumes, one that I personally think is for the better.

After the establishment of the plot of the first volume, this one is mostly filler stories as the rest of the plot points simply require time: what Yusuke should do and how he should act as a spirit. The stories themselves are okay, but it feels obvious that it’s planning for the plot advancement in the next volume.I compared the relationship dynamic between Yusuke and Keiko to Ranma and Akane. I still get that vibe, but Keiko isn’t as violent or in denial like Akane was, which makes reading the series more enjoyable.

The story is somewhat entertaining, although a lot of it feels largely like filler that doesn't really contribute to the overall plot. Yusuke's revival at the end seems rather sudden, as if the author decided he wanted to take the story in a different direction and rapidly rushed through the rest of the steps needed to justify reviving Yusuke. I'm going to at least read the next volume, because the characters are somewhat interesting, and it sounds like it might get better starting in volume 3.

This definitely seemed like a throw back series but I thought the characters were well developed and the action from the series came across well. The fighting scenes were fantastically done but I was never really able to get into the story.
