Island on the Border: a Civil War Story Reviews
Excellent children's Civil War book of conflict in border states Missouri and Kansas, covering complex issues well, for the 10+ set. Doesn't shy away from unpleasant truths of war and human behavior, but without gory detail. I learned more of the Civil War from this book than any of my schoolbooks, unsurprising as Miss Dick was a teacher and was born in a time when she could still hear stories like this first-hand. Should be considered a classic. I think I'll send it to my 12-year old niece, who likes to read about "things that are real".
